I'm Relatively new to VS, and I've seen a bunch of new members since I joined.  I had a Cummins diesel truck before my Volvo, and of course I belonged to a forum like this one for my truck.   The main difference that I've noticed is that on the Turbo Diesel forum, EVERYTIME a noob would sign up and as the typical noob question: "what can i do to make my truck/car go faster?"  On the Turbo Diesel site EVERY RESPONSE was: " Get a Set of Gauges first... (Boost, EGT, Trans Temp were the big 3) establish some baseline numbers first, so you can tell if and how much your mods are helping.
Why do I not see that here?  The boost gauge gets tossed out there, but so many times the first thing is ECU, Exhaust, Intake.. and so on.   Now, my biggest problem is I missed out on the group buy for the triple A-pillar pod, so I'm waiting for the next one before I get my gauges... I also bought my car with many things already done to it as well...  Anyway, I'll get off my soap box now...  What do you guys think?  I think the diesel guys had a good point about getting gauges first, then starting to do the big mods...

Oh, they also had a cool phrase they all used to say, I'm sure some of you have heard it...  BOMB...  Better Off Modified Baby.....

On the topic of gauges, which is more effective for us? TOT or EGT, or are both a waste?

Charles is right...However I belive we are making some decent progress on our "Stage 0". Most of the people who post in a panic of sorts with things like "my car runs like poo, i'm getting bad gas milage, my car feels slow E/T/C" get the stage0 rammed down their throat as an answer and i would bet 90% of the time that is fix.

I agree! As a noob myself, I'm taking the expert advice that this forum has put out and currently working on stage 0 and have faith this will inprove the car's perfromance a lot. I already have the plugs, cap/rotor, filters, hoses, and getting a o2 sensor put in hopefully tomorrow.

I think a boost guage is only for turbos anyway...

Another NooB here. A few of my swedespeed members refer to this site so I thought why not join. So Hi!!!!

I think guages should be a first step . The information conveyed by stock guages is useless. I have been thinking of getting a decent boost guage for my car . I just don't know where to start or what to get that will look classy and would be just as functional.

I'd take a good WBO2 setup over either of those.

Why is EGT a waste? In my diesel days it was good to know the EGT to prevent melting your pistons... Aluminium melts at ~ 1200 F. Why is not that big of an issue in our cars?

Just for clarification, do you mean EGT of all five combined, or EGT cylinder by cylinder?
