Because this engine has been on non-synthetic for it's past 123,000 miles.. dunno if I want to switch now. Normal motor oil works just fine.

If you're set on non-synth, the valvoline high-milage (red bottle) is about the best in my opinion. $10 for 5 quart jug at walmart.

If you want synthetic that is easy to get, then Mobil 1 would be my choice. I want to say it's around $20 for a 5 quart jug at walmart.

Now, if you want the best oil for your car, get Motul 300V. Not cheap ($50-75 for 6 quarts), but the best synth I've ever used.

Overall, you'll find most people are quite happy with Mobil 1.

The problem with switching after 123,000 miles is that the synthetic oil may loosen some of the oil gaskets inside the engine, and possibly lead to leaks, just an advisory.

BTW, Im using Mobil 1 15w-50 in hot South Florida.

I switched from synthetic blend to full synthetic at 105k. I like the Motul Turbolight 4100 10W40. No problems or leaks of any sort at almost 110k now.

most of you on here have cars with higher mileage than most, so i would suggest using a high mileage oil, not necessarily a synthetic oil, but whatever is recommened by your owners manual, or by the techs over at a volvo shop, would be the oil to use. Switching from a regular oil to a snythetic oil will not do any damage to your engine whatsoever. So it's personal preference. I would suggest going with a valvoline oil, that's what most volvo dealships use. Synthetic blend is always god too wink.gif

I read a comment on a board the other day which said "once you've changed to synthetic, that's it. There's no going back."

Any comment on this? Why would they have said you can't use fossils once you've used synthetics?

I have always used Valvoline oil, from 60K-120K I was using the durablend, 1/2 syn 1/2 dino. Recently I started using the Max Life full syn and love it. The one time I didnt use valvoline my engine started ticking like a time bomb, I used Quaker state, I will never use that again.

Im not sure if the comment once you go synth you never go back refers to preference or not. Id also like to know if there are issues. I use redline 10w30 synthetic I have a friend that uses something like 0w50 in his supra. Redline is apparently one of the top brands but mobil1 will do just as well....yeah and Ive heard that Maxlife stuff is THE best by another friend. The only time I havent used synthetic was for my rx7 turbo II because rotaries get gunked up by it.

I think the using synthetic and not being able to go back may have something to do with the seals inside the engine.

A quick reply - what I've been told is that syn causes the seals to swell, and changing back to conventional oil causes the seals to shrink back beyond their original state.

Synthetic or nothing, BIATCH!

I like Amsoil but dammit if Costco didn't go and start carrying that Sim-Thetic Mobile 1 for a darn fine Costco price. Mobile 1 for me now baby!

I just bought a box of 12 quart bottles of Castrol GTX. Simply because I never had issues with it. I couldn't find any Mobile 1 non-synthetic at Kragen though...

Mmm, runs smooth w/ a new filter and oil.

Castrol should be fine. I used it for many years before going with Mobile 1. It seems that Castrol is more of a marketing company now than a oil company.

BTW Mobil 1 is synthetic only.
