18t Turbo Worth It?

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the volvo scene and just bought a 97 850R wagon. So far I did a chip upgrade from Speedtuningusa and love the gains. NExt will be an exhaust. I can get my hands on an 18T turbo and t he downpipe as well for next to nothing. Will the gains be woth the hassle? Thaanks for the imput!!

yes, gains will be def. worth the hassle, do it ! ! !

we're talking at least a 20 hp increase !

This would take me over 300hp. From what I hear, the rods in these cars don't like 300+hp. Is this true? Also, since the car is an automatic would I have more turbo lag with the 18T? The one thing I dont like right now is the car wont hold solid boost till redline. My eclipse would hold 17psi all theway till redline. Thanks for the help so far.

I'm looking at swapping to a 18T as a temp fix... it's definitly good. You don't have the surge issues of the 19T, and you've got resonable boost that will last until redline (unlike the 15g). It hooks right up to the stock manifold, so you can't go wrong... and it's cheaper than the VMS options (not to knock VMS, I plan on snagging their full setup in a bit.. )

Oh yea.. you don't have to worry about killing things with the 18T. Just avoid high boost in the low RPMS, and you're golden.

Actually guys bending rods is really not due to low boost and low rpm. The big problem is Detonation. Valves seat pressure Higher mile cars is part of the reason i think. People with the 19T have been running high boost levels which causes the valves to float. This is not good sad.gif Im not gona drag this out cause its not the right post but i would say as long as you have enough fuel and timing isnt too advanced which i think the " 19T " base map from upsolute is. The piston wants to go down before the top of the stroke and thats what is bending the rods IMO. im not saying boost away before 3000 but its not as big a deal as you all think.

Thanks guys for the info.

My brother-inlaw is a volvo tech and can get me a 18T plus the downpipe for next to nothing. I just did not want to do it unless the gains would be noticable. I had a lot of fun building my last car which was a eclpise but once I got into 300hp range I had real traction issues. I will go ahead and do the turbo and change the injectors out to match. I hope it will hold boost until redline.

Im from the uk and have a 1996 850R Auto with an 18t and running the 304bhp 15g map from rica.

I would say yes go with it! I noticed that the 18t holds boost right up to redline, its seems stronger, smoother and just builds. the 15g would give a nice punch then would die off.

Good deal, looks like you got your hands full. The chip is something I'm looking at in the near future and will probably go with Speedtuningusa. From what I hear, you get the most bang for your buck.

i got the speedtuning chip and love it. i would recommend it to anybody.

quick question... does speedtuningusa test the chip on cars?? or do they just put what they think should be there... also... your car prob isn't making full boost up to redline becuase your running factory exhaust.... once you get a better flowing exhaust on there... youll notice a lot more power in the higher RPM range
