I own a low mileage 2003 XC70.
We love the car - except that we are experiencing horrible low end power (hesitation from a start, lots of perceived leg...).
We were given a S60 (2.5T - which is the same engine as our XC) as a loaner while our's was having the SRS checked out - and we were amazed in how different the acceleration was (OK, its a lighter car - but we are talking 'night vs day' difference).
The dealership says that everything is Ok with our XC (i.e. no check engine lights...), but I would like to get your option.
Would a ECM upgrade help?
Thoughts, ideas, help!

You could try an ECM upgrade. Is your car AWD? FWD? If you feel there is a power deficiency, you could have your car dynoed to see the power, and if it is too low show it to your dealership. an ECM upgrade would help as it would raise your boost levels, etc. thus giving you more power. However, alot of this gain is not instantly noticeable it is later on in the powerband

It sounds like you have a problem there. An ECM upgrade might help, BUT there's a chance it could aggrivate the problem, and it would probably bar you from trying to get Volvo to correct the original problem. Besides, the upgrade might not do anything, depending on the magnitude of the original problem. Your best bet is probably to try and drive another XC70, and see if it behaves like yours; then, if yours is still too slow (and it sounds it), you should talk to your dealer about fixing it. The dynoing is a good idea, since it gives you numbers to work from. Where are you located?

Comparison testing is always a good idea.
Just 'cause an engine isn't throwing a code doesn't mean there's a problem.
