Anyone here know anything about Aerodyne turbos? I'm hunting for more information on their VATN setups.

They went out of business several years ago (so no website that I know of), but Bell Engineering really seemed to feel that their VATN turbos were top-notch. I've found writeups of their Aerochargers on other cars, but I'm wondering if anyone here as any experience with them.

Were talking something along the lines of a varible nozzle turbos? There are few different setups ranging from oil based setups (where oil pressure is used through solonoids to change the AR basicly of the exhaust side).
Holset makes one, it uses an electronic stepper motor.
The best setup I've seen is the one on (from what I saw) M-B diesels over in europe. It uses basicly an waste gate actuator to change the pitch of vanes in the exhaust housing. Same idea, low rpm/exhaust energy small AR for darn near instant spool up, the vanes move out at higher boost/rpm/exhaust levels for big AR topend.
Sounds good to me
Expensive, lots of extra moving parts but intresting. Holset (and Garretts oil powered version) require their own computer controllers.

The VATN system works just like what you described seeing on the MB (except it may not be mechanical, I havn't been able to find that out). I think I've tracked one down, it's ~$1600, but I'm not sure yet...

VATN turbochargers are sweet. This is the future of turbocharging. I'm about to pass out, but I can find some more information on them tomorrow if you'd like.
If you haven't yet, pick up "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. There is a wealth of information about Aerodyne turbos in that book..

Read it, I didn't find that much about them, sadly. Brief references to them, at most.

F-- that, for what they are? More than worth the price. It's more that I can't find all the dang parts I need.

GO to the Miata sites and ask around I believe that at one time many of the turbo kits for the Miata had the Aerodynes.

And I believe that kit is covered in "Maximum Boost"..
Corky Bell also produced a kit for the NSX and I believe it used Aerodyne turbos as well.

Good catch. I didn't realize it, but Chapter 18 is an Aerodyne turbo (I didn't see the name anywhere, but the instructions tipped me off). I'll surf over the Miata forums later... I think this would be a bitchin' turbo on our cars, if it's possible to sneak it on.
