I started the car ( 97 R) yesterday and backed out of the garage about 3 feet when the car died. With the key in the on postition, the instrument cluster lights are all on and the radiator cooling fan runs non stop.
I have fuel pressure at the rail but no spark at the coil.
I am going to replace the cam position sensor with a spare I have and maybe the coil as well but I am concerned by the fan running and wonder if this is some kind of global ECU trouble. Thanks for looking

That usually points to the ECT sensor. It is customary to change the thermostat at the same time.

Is that Engine Coolant Temp. sensor? If that malfunctions or sends bad info, can it disable the ignition?

yes, that is what he refers to by the ECT

a bad ECT can do all kinds of weird stuff, I've never heard of it disabling ignition but it wouldn't surprise me.

Pull the coil wire from the distributor and place the conductor near a chassis ground, crank the engine and look for spark. If you can do this without holding on to the wire it will help you not to get zapped. Ouch!

While the ECT might do it, I'm betting it's the Cam Position Sensor. Considering it's easy to swap out, try that first. - AB

Cam position sensor it is. Don't understand the cooling fan thing but when I put the bad one back in the 98 I robbed it from, same thing.
Did I read here once about being able to get just the guts for the sensor and save a bundle of dough?

I think someone did find that, but I don't remember who. - AB
