Hello all, I am having some trouble determining if my turbo (stock 15G) had the straight or conical flange. I have a '96, so I always assumed I had a straight flange, but looking at these pictures I now think I might have one of the unlucky '96's with a conical. The car is my daily, so I can't take it off and look at it. Looking at the flanges on both, the conical seems to have less material around the edge of the flange (see pic in pinned modifying FWD Volvo) and it looks most like the one on my car sad.gif

I was planning to install a straight flange 16T since my turbo is burning through a fair amount of oil, but I guess if I have a conical flange I would need a new DP to run the 16T?

I know a good 3" DP is a much better option, but the cost combined with the fact that my neighbors don't appreciate a healthy exhaust note nearly as much as I do have encouraged me to put that off for a while. I don't hit max boost often, so I am not as worried about heat for now.

Porting and polishing a rebuilt conical 15G is pretty much a waste of time right (high potential for cracking)?

I am not looking to spend a lot right now, I will be starting an engine build in about a year. I just need something inexpensive to last about 2 years.

Thanks for the help

It looks like mine on my 97: Straight
All the exhaust housings should be / are interchangeable.
So you can use whatever housing and DP you have now on a 16T

If it is the conical though I wouldn't want to reuse that housing would I? Though if T5Manual850 is right and it is the straight flange, the 16T should match up with the DP correct?

Are you sure it's your turbo, you might be leaking out the return line from the turbo, looks pretty wet there in your pics, also hows the PCV system, been serviced lately.

Both good points I probably should have addressed. I serviced the PCV system about a month and a half ago (it was dirty but not terrible). The oil return line IS leaking, and that is the source of some of the leak, but not nearly all of it. I usually need a quart every 300 to 400 miles.

i'm almost positive its straight flange. The conical has a gap between the flange and the turbine housing, it doesn't sit flush....yours sits flush with the housing. The 16t will bolt right up.

Awesome, thanks for the help. I am somewhat new to working on this car, I am used to N/A V8's. Can't wait to build an engine for this thing smile.gif
