Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out to just about all those I know for assistance in starting my career path. Many of you on this board know me personally and know that I am a very honest and hard worker.

I just graduated from Lynn University (Boca Raton, FL.), magna cum laude, with a double major in international business and international relations. Additionally, I have native command of both English and Spanish.

I am a very highly motivated individual, just looking for the right opportunity.

Ideally, I would like to join a company that does business both here in the US and overseas, one that participates in positive globalization, and is geared toward continued success.

I'm willing to relocate and can do so in a moment's notice.

If you happen to know of a company looking to bring someone like me on board, please let me know. My email is jessaye@gmail.com, cell phone is 561 703 3547. My resume and cover letter are attached.

Thanks,

Joseph

Good luck with the job search. All of my friends who are graduating are freaking out because they are having such a hard time finding jobs.

BTW, employers typically don't like resumes that are longer than one page, so you might want to consider shortening yours if possible.

You're an idiot with an oversized head.

I agree about the picture (although some employers ask for pictures)
I agree about the Valet
The Volvospeed thing is debatable - if he focused more on what he does as a vendor and less on what the site is about, it would be better

Any GPA 3.0 and better should be on there, especially a 3.7

Everyone is right in some way.... depends on the job. Some places could care less about GPA, hobbies, degree path. Good job on finishing!

Military experience and college degrees mean you can finish something and can be counted on (mostly) Any employer will choose one of those over someone without.... hence the only upside.

doesnt change the fact that you have an oversized head.

also, i have taken several courses on resume writing, and i have learned a lot about resume writing through professors, my university writing center, and the advisement center at school. just because you read resumes all day doesnt make you an expert on them

I'll throw in my $.02

  • Axe the picture, if an employer asks for it (never heard of that, but hey) you can provide it later.
  • Work on formatting it a bit more for using bullets and such, you've got a good start, but it could be cleaner
  • Remove some of the spacing it will help get closer to one page
  • The one page rule... I've heard two schools of thought. Online more than one page is acceptable they give you space, use it, but don't put stuff on there just for the sake of putting stuff there. In person at a career fair keep it to a page because it makes the recruiter's lives a lot easier and you can always mention stuff not on the resume and they will write it down.
  • Nothing wrong with putting the hobbies on there it shows that you are well rounded.
Just my $.02

Good luck with the hunt, my friends that got out this year are about 50/50 with jobs.

Congratulations.

I agree - no picture.
You don't want to loose out on an interview because someone prejudged you based on that picture.
Also, most employers are accepting resumes electronically so that they can save 'em in a database - they may reject your submission if it has images or other "un-necessary" filler

oh, and any news on when I should expect my super secret stuff?

Look for job postings/descriptions that you are interested in, and tailor your resume to each individual position before you submit. Most larger HR firms and placement/recruitment consultants use keyword database searches anyways. Its best to use action verbs.

Admissions (private schools, state colleges, universities, etc) and recruitment agencies are great entry level positions that are fun and can lead to advancement quickly.

If your not adverse to teaching, most schools will hire an ESL English/Spanish new graduate in a heartbeat.

Congratulations and good luck.

I picked a pretty circuitous route and arguably cheated slightly, but I'm going to get there

Thanks for the tips. The picture was in there because I am sending the resume out to positions in Europe as well (in particular Germany). I think you guys are right and for the US I may look into taking out the picture.

Good point on the bullets and spacing, thanks. I'll definitely take that into consideration.

Congratulations.

Thanks! Great point on the teaching, definitely something I will look in to for the short term. Funny you mention teaching as I responded to a few tutoring job opportunities as well.

This is from my Alma Mater's Career Services webpage: http://www.bates.edu/x163417.xml
It's quite helpful for resume writing and they have a lot of examples if you dig through a bit.

I admit, I strongly disagree with Dave regarding the GPA issue. If you've done well, you should say so on your resume. 1 page long is what you should strive for. At 20 something years old none of us have enough life experience to warrant multiple pages.

Hope this helps a bit.

+++++ 1 to Erik's post. It's not a bad idea to use head hunters and pro resume services. If your not too proud you may need to get way from your major to build experience and pay the rent. It's easy, look at societal trends. The government sector is growing, we are living longer so health care is huge, nurses can make serious dough. Ever think of military or FBI? Translators are big. And data analysis for the intelligence community. We build democracies now you know, so public affairs and communications is major. And your international travel is a big plus.

Take it from an old man, it aint easy now a days, so stay open minded. Congrats and good luck, I know you worked hard.
Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

George Washington, remember him, the UN-Obama?
