I had an electical meltdown in some wires that, according to my mechanic, went to the ABS/TRACs unit. He said they were melted beyond repair and given the cost, he reccommend just cutting everything out, and killing the ABS/TRACs system.
Now, my speedo/odometer are non functioning, which he tells me, after the fact, is because of the removal of the wiring to the ABS system.
Does this add up or I am getting fed a line?
Needless to say, I am not happy about this developemnt at all

Sounds possible, not sure why they melted?
You can just run the speedo wires directly to one of the ABS sensors, driver's front is closest.

Thanks for the reply.
So, you are suggesting that the ABS wheel sensor would send a speed signal directly to the speedometer?
The wires from the sensor should be fairly easy to locate but any thoughts on how to identify the speedo wires? Not sure I would even know where to look.
P.S. Its an '98 GLT.

I know that my speedo didn't work when the ABS module was out of the car being fixed, so I think you are being given correct info.

Wouldn't it be fairly easy / cheap to go to a salvage yard and cut out a section of wiring harness to match the section that melted, then just splice it in to the good sections of the old wires (probably where the mechanic has already cut them out). Gets you the ABS and Tracs as well as speedo, which does have a value.

I had intermitant speedo inop problems. Sourced problem to ABS control module. Contacted modulemasters.com and had module rebuilt for I believe around 120 bucks with 5 year warranty and got new bolts with the kit to install re-conditioned module. Speedo has worked great since. I had a very good experiance with them, would advised 2 day priority shipping if on east coast as their office is in Idaho.

I used to have the ABS light on my 96 850. Didn't do anything about it for a couple of years. Then I noticed intermittent speedo/odo until one day both speedo and odo just stopped. At thi point, I decided I need to do the ABS ECU fix. After I did, ABS light was gone and speedo/odo was working again.

so yeah my speedo dont work since i did my N/A to Turbo swap the abs ecu is just fine and there is nothing unhooked so in theroy i should beable to just tap from a wheel speed sensor or the sensor from the trans and run 2 wires to the speedo and it should work right ?
