I'm hoping to build an exhaust this summer, but I want to be able to pass emissions. Is there anything I should/shouldn't do in particular? My friend had an idea- attach a side pipe with a valve, so when I get it tested, just turn the valve to redirect the exhaust.

some states will flunk you if they see that , you could always cut out your cat and clamp in a testpipe or true straightpipe , then when its time for emissions unbolt the testpipe and bolt your cat back in , then after swap back , i dont know how strict IL is but it should work , also , be careful with tuning , some are great and some aren't , but my point is that some can throw off your emissions , i know a couple guys from back in NY that got a cheap tune , they got power gains but fails emissions (big deal in NY)
