Custom Exhausts - What To Do
#1

For everyone else on here who is getting custom exhaust work done, are you using stainless steel pipes or just regular steel pipe? Since the IPD pipe is still in good shape I really hate to lose the stainless pipe. I guess I could just order a piece of stainless pipe long enough to fill the hole of the one muffler, but then need to find a shop that can work on stainless steel pipe.
What is everyone else doing?

another option= find someone who can bend it and flare it for you then put it together with clamps.

I'm impressed with the sound of the TME muffler at the end of the pipe so far (the EST DP really improved the sound 1000% compared to the stock POS), however, I want to get rid of the suitcase muffler in the middle of pipe closer to the CAT. Hoping the sound will get even better.
Alternatively, I also want to hear how the car sounds with the Magnaflow muffler bolted in place, compare the sound of the 2 mufflers, and keep the one I like best.

you could always ditch the cat , it will make for a really aggressive sound , use clamps after you remove it tho , that way you can bolt the cat back into place for emmisions testing

I love the sound of the TME muffler now, can't wait to hear it with out the suitcase. And then I have the Magnaflow muffler also to hear. The EST DP came with a race cat, and I think I am going leave the CAT in place since Indiana requires emission testing and how much am I really going to gain by removing the CAT anyways. Don't feel like messing with clamping it on and off.

You can certainly MIG stainless (make sure he's using stainless wire,) it just won't be as pretty as if someone TIG'd it for you. A lot of truck body places can weld stainless, might look into that.

autozone for <$5 ... or if you want a nicer look and to have the exhaust resonate a bit better you can get a 2.5" pipe flared to 3"

i liked the sound difference after removing my cat , not to mention faster spool time , as for pollution , thats the least of my concerns , if its even on the list at all ahhahaha

did you add 2 hp by doing that? you can get the same performance results by taking the spare tire out of your trunk, probably better results because there would be less weight behind your rear axle
just get a 3 inch high flow cat

hahaha , changed my hp and torque curve too
the cat is 30-40lbs , so that right there is equal to the weight of the spare tire , and then you have a less restrictive exhaust , and therefor faster spool times ect ect ect
but alot of it is preference , not everyone want the added noise ... and pollution ...
race cats are worth the money if you have to worry about emmisions , i dont , and sense i dont worry about noise i run a straightpipe ... but we're getting off topic and starting to threadjack hahahahaha

Cat is not 30-40 pounds... It wasn't the last time you mentioned that and still isn't
For the original poster, MIGing stainless is just fine. I do it with a crappy flux core welder and the welds are very durable... Most flanges are sold in stainless, most mandrel bends I work with are mild steel, I just welded the downpipe for my 850 the other day, welded some mild steel pipe to the rest of the SS downpipe, then on the other side welded a stainless flange to it. It works just fine...
