I'm replacing my drivers side CV shaft today and from what i've read its usually the splines on the hub side of the shaft that get stuck. Mine came out really easily, but it seems to be stuck in the transmission. All the guides say to use a prybar to just pop it out, but it just isnt budging. I have it in neutral and have been using a 1.5' prybar from below, but it doesnt want to move at all. Am I missing something or is there a trick to getting this thing out? thanks

Theres nothing pertaining to my problem when i search for 'CV shaft stuck'. The only thing close was a guying not realizing the passenger side axle goes through a carrier. My driver's side one is stuck in the transmission and so far cannot pry it out.

This is a common problem. You need a wedge/chisel to tap into the gap between the trans housing and the axle. The wedge/chisel got the axle off with a few firm taps with a rubber mallet.

Search VS for "CV axles wedge chisel tool"

You have everything you need, you just need to get the right angle on it and it will pop out. There is a snap ring on it that holds it in. Best place to pry is from under the car about the 5 o'clock position when viewed from the driver side.

On install, make sure the axle is snapped all the way in. Give it a good shove, then try to put it out by hand. If you can't get it back out, then it is seated correctly.

What brand of axles are you installing? Some of the cheaper ones are known to have fitment problems.

I got an FCP axle that some people on here said were good. I got it in eventually. I put a crappy nut on the end of the axle and a big hammer and gave it a good thwack and it popped right in and i couldnt pull it out.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I had A LOT of trouble with my FCP axle. I sent it back and got an Raxle. Worked like a charm

Was all the trouble just with the installation or was there trouble with it running?

installation. I have the left side from FCP on right now, no problems.

Right side got stuck going in. Pulled it out, smoothed the splines out, tried again, got stuck. Went to raxles.

One think I noticed today while trying to remove my control arms. After trying everything I saw mentioned here ( to no avail), I simply removed the two bolts holding the control arm to the frame. I then struck the control arm once with a hammer, and the whole thing simply fell down. Previously, I had hit the control arm very hard, numerous times etc, but could only get it to budge about 1/2 way. I think the angle prevented the ball joint shaft from moving in the complete vertical, and removing the other two bolts allowed the entire thing to fall. Easy at that point.

I have a question if anyone's interested. I'm replacing my hub and I'm having a problem with tapping the CV axle out. It just won't budge. I've used PB blaster and a sledgehammer and nothing. Any suggestions?

Heat it up for 5 minutes. Screw old nut on until flush. Beat the ever loving crap out of it with a really big hammer. When re-installing, be sure to use anti-seize on the splines.

Thanks for the help. I actually was able to get an axle remover tool from the mechanic and it worked. Now I just have to figure out how to pop out that stubborn ball joint. This is my first ever car repair, definitely a learning process.

There's one potentially helpful tip above in post #12. :)
