I'd check that VLSD first. Viscous couplers are by far the weakest of all lsd options and become worthless over time. Example, the 240sx SE comes with a VLSD in the r200 rear end. 2 drift events and its an open diff, lol. Same with the VLSD setup in the B13 Sentra SE-R, G20, and NX2000. Fine for normal driving but are worthless by 75-100k miles and/or a good flogging. Those are also sealed units which the M59 appears to be as well. Meaning they can't be rebuilt and the fluid cant be changed. So the only option is to replace them once they are spanked. If your oem vlsd is shot then going nuts trying to combine two transmissions is a waste of time and money. See if you can get lucky and find a junkyard tranny with low miles. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Not exactly true.. I have had friends here in Canada that have had quite few tuned Rs with M59s over the years and well over 100K on the them. I also grew up in Europe and have friends and few cousins of mine that had the 850R M59s tuned with 100+K and no issues.

Your friends and cousins tune M59 transmissions?

I picked a pretty circuitous route and arguably cheated slightly, but I'm going to get there

No. Tuned 850Rs with M59 trannys with over a 100k is what I said.

As is the case with all LSDs, their weak point is lots of continuous high speed cornering. Also, I don't see how the 98-00 AWD has any limitation of torque to the rear... it's front biases for sure, but if both front loose traction, I don't see why it wouldn't all slam back there.

That's a good point, I don't recall where I read that or how that would exactly work, since the VC is designed to lock up if it slips excessively

Yup, that's the exact VADIS screen I was thinking of. I don't see anything in the x70 AWD system that actively torque biases, just the natural passive front bias due to it being primarily FWD. Would be fun to see if an audi style worm gear center diff could be made to fit instead of the viscous coupling.
