Timing Belt Turned Ugly

went to do preventative work on my dads 90 740 gle. car sat for a week waiting on the belt. got all the marks lined up and put the new belts on and lined up, cranked the motor a few times by hand and the motor and something kept hitting something. so first thought timing jumped or something and pistons hitting valves etc, i tdc 'd the motor and tried again no avail. so i thought it was unrelated and the torque converter bolts loosened and was hitting the block but that wasnt it. then we took the cams off and the cam carrier and the works, all the valves were closed spun the crank by hand and pistons are still hitting. mind you that all the plugs are also out of the car. spun the motor every which way and theres enough resistance to loosen the crank bolt. so next step is to take the head off which we did and no bent valves or obvious marks noting that the pistons and the valves collided. what i did find is that there was a 2 millimeters thick of carbon built up on the edge of the top of the cylinder, which was causing it to get stuck. after ripping the head out the carbon came out and the head was bolted back on hand tight and the crank was spun and it was free and nothing binding. carbon build up caused the piston to stop shy of tdc??

its a redblock engine? its a non impact engine. pistons cant hit the valves.

its a redblock engine? its a non impact engine. pistons cant hit the valves.



its a red block b234f DOHC motor. pistons can hit valves...

+1 gle is dohc, mmmmmm i love that motor.

but damn thats alot of carbon build up, what condition were the cylinder walls in?

walls have the usual wear and tear for a motor with 180k car has 280k on its 4th motor.

Wrong,there non interferring, my belt snapped going 40mph, no damage, put new belt on and purrs like a kitten.

+1 i had a 87 gle that the belt went on and a 760 T it went on and the motor was fine with a new belt. i think the b234f's were the first for the interference motors..

Put an IPD cam in there nd it will become an interference motor.

Yup, even some stock ground cams made 8 valve motors interference.
