Ok , so the army is FINALLY going to be paying me the money they owe me , i'll have all of it by oct 1st , BUT i have two options as to how to spend the money , what do you guys think is the better choice , dont worry about price , just which is a better buy :

1) parts for my S60 : 16T , tuning , exhuast , fmic , ect.

2) 98' auto S70 GLT with 124,XXX : it has many new parts because the guy has been trying to make it pass emmisions (i dont have to worry about emmisions tho) , including new O2 sensors / thermostat / injectors (oem) / pcv / wires / plugs / vac lines / ect.

so which one do i choose ?!?!

i havent really accomplished much on my S60 but the chance to pick up the S70 for cheap is bugging me , i changed my plan recently so that i can make my S60 last a long time (16T and supporting mods only) and then build up a 98 or older S70 or 850 (19T or bigger with tons of mods) , i just cant decide ... :'(

I'd say invest it instead, or at least half of it.

I concur, I would take the majority of the money and invest it in something safe that you can still get to (12 month CD, or something). Windfalls like this don't happen everyday.

even i'm going to have to agree...

I'd hold onto as much as you can of it.

That being said, I would get parts for the s60 over time.

The S70 will end up costing far more, and do you really want to have to insure two cars on an army salary?

... is this volvospeed or an investment forum ???

my monthly income will be increasing in 2 weeks , my wife left me so now i have more play money , i'm moving into a place that costs half as much , and i will be reenlisting in october which comes with a reenlistment bonus

between the extra monthly income - the reenlistment bonus - lowered monthly expenses - and FINALLY getting the $$$ i've been owed --- i'll be just fine

Yes this is Volvospeed, but remember, Volvo owners are conservative tree huggers.

That being said, with all this money you have, you can't wrong by investing some. Take the windfall and invest it, and with your extra normal cash (bonus, extra pay) play with that. And God forbid, what if something were to happen to you while serving our country, you may need that windfall.

However, I'd soup up the S60.

Invest in something that pays you dividends and take those dividends and use them to play with. Just live like you did when you were married w/ less income. Have a monthly splurge or something with the money you are going to make investing to buy the fun stuff.

Money market account, not much in interest but you can touch it 3 times a month without being charged a fee, and deposit how ever much you wish with no fee's. I'm seeing about 1% right now on 10k, the more you put in the better the interest return will be.

Whenever I get a bonus I always put 1/2 to 2/3 away into my 401k or savings or other investment (depending on the bonus size) and take the rest and splurge on my car. I think when you fall into a good amount of money the best thing you can do is reward yourself, but sensibly. Not sure how much you got, but I'd say look for a bargain 16T, a simple tune, and tranny cooler. I got my 16 for like $350 iirc off fleabay, get a tune from ST for about $375+shipping ($40 each way), and then tranny cooler is $60 plus hosing and fittings. Overall you're in under $1000 which isn't too bad, and I promise you it will hold you off for a while :)

Good luck with everything!

+1 and as for not knowing anything about investing, well, there's no better time than now, I'm just graduated from college/applying to dental schools and I've been investing since I was 14/15, saving my whole life etc... As everyone else has said, and basically this is what I do, save at least half and just put the rest away, out of sight out of mind, you never know when you might need it.
