You could pick up another belt if that is all that you need. The link should have the right one for you.

sorry i forgot to put that the reason the belt snapped is cause the air conditioning unit froze up. im not really worried about air conditioning where i live so i was thinking about getting rid of the whole unit.

Im not 100% sure on what all that connects to, but I do know that those compressors work on 850's B)

Also I would say it was most likely the clutch that went out and again not knowing how it works 100% but seeing the car my compressor came off of, it might work. Someone else might want to chime in here. But as long as it isn't connected to any other main things you should be ok.

My 91 740's AC died years ago, I just removed the belt and let it hang out in there , no need to remove it if the belts not hooked up.

Removing the compressor will cause no issues. If you might ever want to have AC again, I'd recommend leaving the compressor in place until it is replaced. Make sure you vent the freon via an schrader valve before removing any lines, otherwise the potential pressure can make them exceedingly dangerous to remove.

Well I'm not certain about specific 740s, especially MCC type controls, but IINM with ECC type controls, it does normally run the AC compressor when in defroster mode, however, you don't have a working AC compressor, thus the issue is moot. With non functioning AC, your defroster function will still work but be much less effective, especially with a lot of moisture inside the car, where you will have to rely on the heater alone. Just be ready to deal with fogged up windows.
