I had a cracked plastic near the small pipe on the top the expansion tank and was leaking antifreeze. So went around and found a similar used one and cleaned and installed. Now the dash light for low coolant level is on! So looked into it and found out the floater (ring) in the tank doesn't float! It stays at the bottom when the tank is filled to normal level. Cleaned it more and again the same thing. It actually moves if you flip the tank upside down..

Have you experienced this painful situation?

I have not experienced this but it is common.

Just swap in the float from your old tank. If you already threw it away then it's time to buy a replacement ...

Unfortunately it can not be opened! It is a one piece deal.

The sensor itself is removable. I've done it a few times and in fact I even have a spare tank and sensor sitting in front of me.

A bit of warning though, if you use a plier to pull it out, it could break it (I broke one like this).

If you keep an eye on thing like your coolant level, you can try unplugging it.
Suprisingly, it will not give you the low light unplugged.
My has been unplugged since before I got the car a year ago....
