Just an update...
The cause of my problem was the universal joint on the steering arm that passes through the firewall. It must have started to seize up. Everything is back to normal after hosing it down with a can of WD40.

I sprayed the universal joint that's about 2" past where the steering shaft exits the firewall under the hood. It's pretty tough to miss. You have to spray it from underneath the car though. I've been driving around without the heat shield on the turbo and I probably cooked the joint. This cured my steering problem 100%.
