so i was wondering if the california guy that have open filters just change them back to the stock turbo airbox whenthey go and get their smog checks done? also does anyone know if an aftermarket FPR will pass through a smog check? i mean one could say the old one broke and that volvo does not make the same one anymore

anything else that is a total no no at smog checks

When I took it in they said I had to replace it with the stock one to pass.

I'm in the process of doing this also, and I too had to replace the air box. I thought I could get away with leaving the small K&N filter on the SAS hose...WRONG, so another week ordering up a new SAS hose so it would connect back to the air box. To put the hose on, I had to remove the battery and the tray for easy access. In doing so, I dumped all the memory out of the ECU, so when they hooked up the ODBII everything was a blank, which is not acceptable, so it's drive the car around for a few days until I have some data logged, then MAYBE FINALLY I'll have my car smogged.

When I used to get smog done, he'd just say that my car was badass, and then pass me.

Since when is a 19T and cheap tune a heavily modified engine?....lol. Getting someone to pass your car illegally has nothing to do with living in LB.

To the OP- to pass the visual you need the stock airbox on the car. I don't believe having the FPR would fail visual.

FWIW, I was told by my local smog tech (& a local PD officer) that my iPd SR5T intake was okay, but(!) only because it did not have any emissions equipment tied into it (I don't have SAS). If I had SAS, then I would have had to reinstall the stock airbox for the visual portion of the smog inspection...

i have a 1996 and there is not other hoses other than the pipe to the turbo from my airbox so i assume i dont have sas?

what is sas actually? sorry

SAS stands for Secondary Air System. On cold start for the first 30 seconds only, it pumps additional air into the system, which is supposed to aid in creating less emissions. It's more of a pain in the SAS!

so the SAS pipe comes off the original airbox and goes into the TB? coz if so my airbox does not have anything like that, at least nothing that i can see

They passed me with it but told me to change it... I took it to a place across the street from a ricer shop

It must be a 49 state 50 state deal. Because if you have SAS on your car, the air box has an extra fitting on the front side of it. The SAS hoes attaches on the clean side of the box as this is it's source for air. Underneath the battery tray there is an electric pump which has an output hose. I haven't bothered to trace it, but I believe it hooks into the EGR in some manner. (don't quote me, it's a guess).

ah ok, well my car does not have egr either so i guess i dont have it! hahah, and it still passes smog! oh well

i will have to keep the airbox and put it back every time i smog i guess

Just as a final note, I PASSED SMOG TODAY!!! This was the first time I've had to do so since my build. I'm a happy camper.

Yes I had the OEM air box in, as well as the SAS hose, here is what the rest of it looks like...
