Hey folks!

Just found a 2004 S60R that had engine fire, for sale at $6000. The question is "Is it worth investing?" In the photo the intake and air filter box had been removed, for some reason(I guess they were damaged). Someone also removed the plastic covers (blue).

Any expert input as far as what it takes to rebuild it, assuming that the engine is still ok? :)

Unless you are an A mechanic and you are very comftorable with diagnosing electrical issues and are ready to spend some coin, I would stay away.

You can buy perfectly fine s60R's for 10-15k these days.

No idea what caused the fire.

From the photos of parts taken off I could see a high flow K&N (cone) filter.
What worries me is what caused the fire and yes the electrical wires if some are melted.

don't buy it. You're basically buying a NA car that doesn't work.

Looks like he stripped the engine, manifold probably, headers, throttle body, intercooler, just to name a few. Not worth it. Offer $2k

fire in the engine compartment? only time ive seen that on a volvo is when a rod went through the block and shot oil all over the exhaust.

but definately NOT worth the investment. I think 2k is overkill as all the parts through volvo to make it look like an R engine again will cost you probably 6k. Never mind the wiring you'll have to chase and then pray that it doesnt catch fire again.

Thats retarded. There are 8k in parts there easy. Even totaled, think read ended or major accident, S60Rs sell for more than that.

Maybe if no control modules had to be replaced. If so you would be at the mercy of the dealer because they are VIN coded.

haha this thread has gone to hell in a handbasket...

not the typo, the whole sentence... have you seen a repair bill for a "major accident" volvo? rear ended $1000 bumper cover out the door. Crumple zone crushed? more than 8k.

but I'm not even sure what I'm replaying to because the sentence makes absolutely no sense in the topic. 2009 XC90 "major" accident = $55 000 CAD repairs. GG

It makes no sense if you quote pieces of it, see above. The entire sentence was:

Even totaled, think read ended or major accident, S60Rs sell for more than that.
And should have read:
Even totaled, think rear ended or major accident, S60Rs sell for more than that.

I am not sure how much more clear I can be. Totaled comes in all forms. I remember BMWs we used to get for racing that were totaled with 400 miles on them because the wiring harness as cut. Then there is totaled, like the car is 3' long now. I digress. That car has WAY WAY more than 2k in parts in it. Rims, spare, radio, and interior alone would fetch more than that. Even at auction here they are ~3k totaled.

The moral of the story. Move out of Canada.
