car is a 2002 v70t5 Happens since I installed my quaife, i did a 1-2 pull againsts those new M3s a few weeks ago and when I shifted to second there seemed to be a crack type of noise, the car hooked up... to much.

Since then:
Often times when I drive over a slight lump, or when the car drops off an entrence or a small dip comming out of a driveway, i feel like there is something loose,

I removed the 2 front wheels and examined everything seems solid, control arm bushings are mint, ball joints as well... any suggestions? Everything seems ok around the axels and tranny. End links are tight... I don't know man...

With the wheels on is there any movement in the 12 and 6 or 3 and 9 positions?

not sure what you mean by movement... like if a kick on the wheels if there is slack? no.

and the 6 and 12, 3 and 9 not sure what you mean.

Also when I installed the quaife, I removed the tranny under the car by removing the cross member, which implies releasing the stearing rack from the cross member, and ever since I put everything back together, there is this anoying skeaking when I turn the wheels at low speed, can't figure out if it comes from the steering wheel in the car or from the stearing rack outside of the car, again, only low speed or when parking. Maybe the 2 problems are related?

i think he means with the wheels off the ground...one hand at 9 and one at 3 give a shake then one hand at 12 and one at 6 give it a shake.

you are testing for tie rod ends being bad. could also be a sway bar end link. mine made a clunking noise like a bad shock. i changed out the spring mounts and it did nothing still clunked. it finally stopped when the sway bar endlink finally broke...then i knew where the clunk was from, also my car has 168k too so the other parts were swapped out because they are worn out also.

Oh I see!! Ok thanks man I'll jack i up and do the 12-6 9-3 test, now that you say it, I think this makes sense.

I checked the end links but they are mint, they are actually QBM Motorsports extreme end links with bearly 10k km on them...

But for tie rods, that's a good point, you think the squeaking in the steering could come from there as well? I guess from a bad spherical bearing in the end of the tie rod...

car has 140k km and a few track days in the steering....

Just talked to my buddy and when i went back to his garage when the squeak started, we put the car on the lift and i was inside turning the steering while he was under the car checking where the sound came from ,he lubed the u joint that connects the strearing shaft to the stearing rack and the noise stoped, but only for a few days, it came back when the lub wore off... should I greece it with something more resistant or is there a common problem with this joint...?

any ideas?

your steering boot/bearing inside the car popped off or requires lubrication. And when you put the member back in you probably bent the joint... or bent the column.

yes that's it, all the volvos have them. your loose feeling may be the column "popped" out or is bent from it binding when putting the cradle back in.

ok so now the squeake is deff gone, although my inner boot thingy was a bit diffrent from the ones in the pic (p2 vs p1) i lubed everything up and it's A1!! Thanks for that.

1 problem down.

Now for the loose, it's still there, but i doubt it has anything to do with the steering, I put my 2 problems in the same thread but they feel totally unrelated.

The loose ness is not when I turn at all, only when i drop of the 2 inch ciment of a driveway or of my garage... very balljointy feel...

I did the 12-6 9-3 test and no ''luck'' there is no loose whatsoever...

on occasion you won't feel balljoint play unless you pry the balljoint downwards via control arm and use the spindle as leverage. but other than that if its after a bump sounds like your shocks might be going? or springs? if nothing else is loose?

lolll, i hope not they are brand new KW V2 coilovers... i'll do the balljoint test your reffering to tomorow to make sure, balljoints I bought were not OEM but were supposed to be excellent quality...

yesterday i was examining a few things in the engine bay, and when I would press on the car around the hood latch to make the suspension bounce (very little bounce because of the stiff suspension)I could clearly hear the sound of the loose that I am refering to...

I was looking around, touching everything and BAM

I think I found it. I have a big FMIC and the bracket that holds the most weight is snaped, causing the intercooler to wabble around end knock on stuff, loll.

I hope thats the problem ,ill fab up a new beefier bracket this week... that would explain why it would only wabble on certain types of bumps.

might want to add the rubber boot if you haven't already. mine started rattling around 10k miles. replaced them with aurora ends..

Hey fellaz, I did not update the status of the clunk after the new bracket, but it wasent that.

Good news is I think I've really Isolated the noise this time, it is one of 2 things: the strut mount, or the spring seat.

I thought it was the strut mount for the following reason:

clunk happens when going off small bumps like garage enterance or driveway entrance. Noise is ONLY when car is cold, after driving for 20 minutes or so, it stops, so def heat dependent noise (when heat expands part, noise stops)

I isolated the noise because I waited for the car to be cold, opened the hood, pushed on the front bumper to make the car bounce and the clunk comes from the strut towers, it's very distinc and easy to hear. The only part I see is the strut mount, so that was my diagnosis, BUT...

I just contacted a very competent parts guy at a local volvo dealership, he says that the SPRING seats often fail, and that the new fix at volvo is to replace all of the noisy seats with XC90 seats because they are beefier (bulletin from volvo advised them of the fix) and he says that they very rarely change the actuall strut mount, they rarelly fail.

So, you think its the spring seat since they are prone to fail and the sound comes from that region (strut tower) or it might be the strut mount?

I hope its he spring seat cause I can get them for 44$ and the strut mounts are 144$!! yikes!

I've been rolling on KW coiloves, lower and stiffer than stock for 2 summers, so unusual wear is not impossible...

My bet is that it's the seat.
I've had to replace mine twice - once when I lowered the car, and about 20k miles later. I used the IPD heavy duty seat both times.
Pop the hood and check your hood liner right above the seat - When mine are going out, the top of my shock will hit against the hood liner, causing an indentationin the material along with a dull knocking sound.

Oh man!! thank you so much for that info, thats exactly what it does, when I push on it, I can see the rod of my shock and the Nut holding it in place move up a good 1/4 to 1/2 inch!

You da man! I will check the IPD heavy dutty, I had not considered that option, but the XC90 seats seem like an awesome OEM mod. Thanks again, will change the seats and see how it goes!
