We just got finished installing a auxiliary trans cooler today. I got it off a XC90 T6 after we put a new trans, radiator, cooler lines, and cooler. Volvo makes us replace all with a trans replace. They can be easily flushed and cleaned but we still have to replace them so we have a couple laying around.

Posted Image
The stock brackets made to the cooler were heated and flattened. We drilled and tapped the front bumper on the left side and made a bracket for the right side.

We used 3/8" barbed fitting from home depot and good clamps to plumb in the hoses. No leaks and I only spent $8.27 and 3 hours.

Yeah, the FMIC look-a-like is a plus. Thats another reason we put it there instead of on the radiator. It was also easier and cleaner there.

I had 4 old trans lines that I used for the connections at the cooler (4 to choose, I only used 2...obviously), I didn't get any of those pictures, I will bring my camera to work and take some proper ones

I finally got some better pictures of my lines today.

I tried to straighten the hose at the trans for more room, but i f-ed it up and ended up having to weld it together. No leaks though.

Here are the lines spliced into the lower hose.

It may not be the best looking but it is very effective. I can feel a difference in shifting after some hard driving. this also adds about a quart of fluid to the system helping cool even more. I was very concerned about hoses rubbing together, I wrapped the hose with a bigger piece of hose adn ty-strapped a couple things together. Im not quite happy with the way it looks but it very effective.

You keep the original tranny cooler in the loop?

YES, the radiator's cooler does most of the cooling.this is just an auxilary cooler.

Are the lines the same as an 850's, you just used the clips for seal and retention?

Or do I need S80?XC90 lines?

Did you have to modify the air guide?

The line ends are different, i think the change happened in 99- anything. You will have to cut and splice into your existing lines.
Any line off 01- s60, s80, v70, xc90 can be modified to work. i used xc90 lines mainly b/c i had them and they were free

yes i had to cut some of the side of the air guide off, but there are pics of another install on this thread were the guy mounted to the radiator. i dont think youll have to modify that way.

how I ran my lines I had to cut away from the airguide, I will try and get those pictures I promised up today :) but what I did have to cut was very easy, just whipped out the dremel and went to town B)

Cool, that widens the available parts pool.

Love a Dremel.

The rest is obvious, good job guys!

well I finally got pictures, so here they are,

thats where I cut out on the passenger side

the drivers side

without the airguide on

Posted Image
how I spliced the lines

Posted Image

I had to bend the air temp sensor up a little to make room for the cooler

I know this was a original post for a trans cooler, but I used the same parts but just installed a little different and used it for my steering due to the strain on the system during autocrossing, especially when the course was over 40 seconds long.

What did you use to join the hoses together? And I see you used hose clamps on the hard line junctions, no crimp. Can you buy the hard line and coupler with a hose barb or bead on it?
