the GREY fi relay on the fan shroud... or the TPS itself. Check the wiring to that grey relay on the fan shroud!

I Grey Fuel Injection Relay on the fan shroud is new. I will have to check the TPS and the wiring to the FI relay.

Do you think this will cause the crank but no start and the flashing up arrow and the mode selector light? The dash lights up like a christmas tree but now I get the flashing lights I mentioned.

Typically a condition of the bad FI relay, or an issue with it, will be NO CHECK ENGINE light when you first turn the key to the II position. The flashing arrow will come on regardless. Check this out. When mine went, you could crank till there was nothing left... But since the FI relay sends power to the ECU and thus everything else.

What if your car starts but idles really rough, but is fine when warm? Is it the same things to check?

JordanW nailed it on the head. I replaced the new FI relay with the old one I had and the car fired up immediately. That makes 2 bad relays or 2 relays that don't work as they should in my vehicle. Well I hope that the end of that. Thanks JordanW.

Santino, thanks for the update. I ordered a FI relay, and an FP relay for delivery Friday. I'll do staged fixes to see what fixes it for me, I also have an ECT ready to go in. Glad you got it fixed.

I got a Fuel Pump Relay in the mail from Darrell Waltrip Volvo on Friday but didn't have a chance to install it until today. It was warmer than usual this morning so that might have had something to do with the following.

I tried to start the car with the old pump relay, it cranked sputtered and held roughly but I turned it off before it could stall. I then installed the new FPR and it came to life quite quickly, was still a bit rough for about 30 seconds but leveled off happily.

I became more convinced that this was a FPR problem when I found this link while looking for the buzzing that was happening behind the dash.

So, Cold Start Problems? Try the FPR first as it's an easier fix and cheaper, then try the ECT sensor second (but make sure you have some clamps and a 7" long T40 socket bit.
