2000 S40. Starts fine - drive 2 miles and park. Come back 2 hours later and it starts, but instantly revs to like 3,000 rpm. Shut off and try to restart. Turns over, but will not start and temp guage pegs to hot although engine is cool. Two hours later it starts right up, but revs jump a few times at red lights on the way home. Something is starting to fail? Any idea what?

I'm sure your engine light is on and has stored an A1 code?

Replace your ECT and thermostat.
