So on hot day this past summer I decided to wash my car. Not thinking twice about how hot the metal roof of my car was in comparison to the cold water coming out of my garden hose, I started hosing off my car. Soon after I noticed a hazy spot on the back of my roof and I realized I must have separated my clear coat. Now the clear coat has cracked away in the shape of small circles in many spots. So yeah I screwed up.

What are my options. Can I get just that area repainted? Can I reapply clear coat. I had hoped to repaint my car eventually but don't have the cash for that now. What would you do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well to ease your mind a little, the black 850r's seemed to have this problem a lot. We had about 6 black ones that came thru the shop and at least 3 of them had f'd clear on the roof.

wet sand the clear coat in the panels that need it with 1500 grit, till all you have left is paint and no clear. or the clear is very dull, and re clear the panals, should be an easy fix. that way you dont have to deal with new paint vs old dull paint.

It was probably just a matter of time anyway.
I didn't do anything like that to mine and then one day I started getting the same thing. My clear on those spots is completely gone. :(

My 1997 has a clear coat, yours may have been repainted if it only has a single stage paint.

the clear will re-fade after wet sanding anyway

it will look good for a while but will go right back to its faded state

your clear has basically broken down, the correct way to fix this is to take the roof down and re-spray the whole thing including re-clearing

the damage to the clear was most likely already done before you even sprayed the car down so don't feel too bad :)

and lastly yes this is very common on black 850's

I think I have read that the color red was single stage and all others were 2 stage.

And the car has been repainted (multiple times  :D ), all by me though

WRONG.

I have a 1994 turbo in 601 and the CLEAR is gone in some spots. The whole rear spoiler peeled on the top side.

you do realize that cars can be resprayed....for instance if the car was in an accident or maybe a spoiler was added after the fact

The spoiler or other parts must have been cleared aftermarket, because no 601 red 850 came from the factory with a clear coat on the body, they were all single stage.

The black definitely has a clear and from what I have seen, starts to leap off the car unless meticulously maintained.
