So merging onto I-4, I put the car into 5th gear and idle went the tach. FML

Opened up the hood, saw the throttle cable hanging off the wheel, pulled the rest of the cable out from the sleeve and it was nice and snapped

My question is, has this ever happened to anyone else, and where can I find a throttle cable cheap (please not from the stealership if possible)

Also, it looks like a pretty straightforward install... Anyone care to shed some light on things I'd want to be aware of when doing it?

Oh, and I had this happen to me on my old 240 and I also had it happen to me on my motorcycle back in the day so it does happen.

no, throttle cables FTW, drive by wire FTL, not checking your 200K mile car for a fraying wire FTL

Part number is 9157601. It's only @$35 - $40 at the dealership and it's a dealership part only.

Install takes no more than 15 mins.

- Disconnect at pedal and throttle body.
- unplug sensor at firewall.
- pull/pry gromet at firewall.
- install new cable in reverse.

There are 2 different cables: 1 for automatic which is listed above and this one for the manuals: 9157600

I got an auto one from FCP recently. Autos have a kickdown switch integrated into it. I was curious why it was different from the manual as well. When I installed mine, I figured it out. Actually it calls out the switch in the instructions in the Hayes manual.

I had to replace mine since the throttle was sticky. The final straw was when it stuck at full throttle after going up a hill. Prior to that it would stick at light loads and a blip of the gas would fix it.

Joe, who hasn't posted on here in a while and converted his R into an M56 FWD car last year changed out his cable to the proper manual one and said it significantly improved throttle feel (pedal feel) and control. I trust his opinion on this so it is probably a worthwhile "upgrade" for manual swappers.

Certainly if you have a manual to start out with you might as well use the proper cable.

Good write up, however it would be excellent if you could provide some photos to show the : disconnect at pedal and throttle body; sensor at firewall and the grommet at firewall.
