1999 S70, 98,000 miles. Non-turbo.
I can't seem to find others who have had this happen. Insert key into ignition, turn to 'start' and nothing happened with the starter and the engine does not make a sound and doesn't move. However, the headlights flash as if the alarm is activated, not allowing the car to start.
Current workaround: Turn the key to 'off' then back to 'start' and the car starts normally.
Is this a known issue or what would the diagnostics be? Is there a way to clear/reset the alarm system? I put a new battery in this car a few months ago and cleaned the cables off really well. Also, I had reset the ODBII six months ago and all the sensors are reset and active.
I'm not sure where to look or how to proceed.
Please let me know what else I need to post to help you answer my questions.
Thank you for any help provided!!

If the S70 has a transponder key like my S80 then I'd bet it's the antenna ring.

Is the antenna ring the 'electrical portion' of the ignition switch?

It's an antenna that looks like a ring around the ignition switch.
It's how the transponder in the key communicates your security code.

... and if you can't hear the alarm then you probably do need a siren too. I don't think that would trigger the immobilizer though; some people just unplug the thing when it shorts out and the car still starts/runs fine. It's actually a peripheral device and not a full blown-module. Mine was draining the battery though so might cause a no-start condition that way.
