Soooo
I removed my ABS module from my 1999 V70R so I could replace it with a working unit. (At the time my ABS and Traction Control skid lights were illuminated on my instrument cluster...it was sort of like a Christmas tree...only different)
After reinstall / restart...Not only did I have the ABS/Traction control light on, the (red) BRAKE light and Check Engine was also illuminated....I also noticed I had no Odometer. And the cherry on top of the cake...No Speedometer.
I don't know about you but for me there is nothing more frustrating then when I take something apart to fix an issue....and end up making things worse...much much worse.
Since I had been driving with a faulty ABS module for the last 64K I didn't think driving home from the shop with a few extra lights on my Christmas Tree of an instrument cluster was going to matter...
After the first mile or 2 I immediately noticed that my transmission was shifting differently, but because I had JUST installed a new dual TME exhaust system prior to removing the ABS module I didn't think anything of the occasional hard shift.
About half way home I decided to pop the hood, remove the plug and inspect all of the pins. All looked perfect, and when I flipped down the cover (hood) to seat the plug.....wham. My (red) Brake failure light and traction control skid lights went away, and my odometer / speedometer came back to life...or so I thought
The next day I went to drive the car up to the supermarket....about half way there the speedo / odometer went dead and the transmission FELT like it was slipping....when I applied throttle the motor started to stumble. I immediately pulled to the shoulder, popped the plug, reinstalled....and once again all was well.
At this point all I knew is that I either have a wiring issue (maybe I had broken a wire sheath when I removed the plug), or somehow the plug was not seating correctly.
Luckily I had a friend that was willing to temporarily swap in a "working" ABS unit so that I could get a base line on all of the above symptoms. When the plug was removed, he immediately looked at the slide pins that seat the clip. One side had broken, so when the Cover (hood) of the plug was pushed down only one side would properly seat. This my friends is a huge huge huge problem, and to the untrained eye (ME), was not easily recognizable.
So if you swap your ABS Module, and instead of fixing the issue....you make it worse...check the slide pins to your plug. You might find one or both are broken.

Sorry about your experience.....but, you drove it for 64 thousand miles with a defective ABS module? So much for safety.
You got money for the fancy TME exhaust, but not for proper safety. Please post your VIN number so the rest of us can avoid a car that was so carelessly tended to.

sounds to me like youve swapped a bad abs unit for a worse abs unit.
i take it that the "new" unit came from another car?

You still have braking function... just not ABS
As for the rest... I agree. I see people spend money on crap all the time that has nothing to do with maintaining the car properly or preserving it's general drivability... but so it goes.

I'll step in since I know a little about this.
He got the exhaust from another car he sold where the buyer didn't want it, net cost $0
The ABS module he swapped in was a brand new unit I had, so it's known good.
Point being, ME7 networked cars will have multiple issues arise when one module (ABS) goes bad.
ECU will set a code, Trans code plus shifting issues, ABS (of course) and STC/Tracs, and no speedo/odo
