Ok...borrowed a RICA 18psi tune from Aquitas to test it out.

My car was pretty strong in stock form - you could hear the "hissing" sound of boost pressure faintly on the driver's side of the car, but power was strong and consistent so I wasn't fully convinced it was a boost leak. I figured it was normal.

I installed the RICA tune, took it for a spin. At part throttle the first couple times, I'd get a strange whistling sound. Couldn't tell if it was wastegate flutter or something else. Then, I decided to try a WOT pull off the line. That faint "hissing" sound from the driver's side got 3x as loud, and it was then slower than stock.

It *almost* sounds like it's on my side of the firewall, behind the cluster - but that could just be my imagination? Is it common for the line to the "Turbo" gauge in the cluster to leak or pop off? And does anyone have a photo of where this line originates under the hood?

Any ideas on where to look first? I will post a video later tonight - so please check back and let me know what you think it might be.

Thanks!

that's exactly what happened to me yesterday.

I had a vac/boost leak somewhere and found that 1) the boost line in the engine by was very brittle (its located underneath the throttle cable) and 2) right at my gauge the line had creased and created leak in the line.

what is your hg at?

Check the IC plumbing. Typical splits occur in the hose to TB - splits under IAC hose. Hose down by distributor/airbox inlet hose splits vertically. Either one can open up under boost, seal under vacuum. Mine didn't open until 10psi boost was reached. You may be experincing worse performance precisely because it can boost higher, and one of the hoses is opening even more than it did on your stock setup.

I would try sticking my finger into a vac port to measure my vacuum, but uh...I should probably just buy a gauge. :P

I have one sitting here, but it's digital...I either have to install a MAP sensor to run the gauge or just buy an analog and run that for the time being.

Going out to make the video now...be back in a bit.

well if its that loud i would suspect it would be in the cabin.

do you have an aftermarket gauge? I would check those connections first.

No gauge. I'll look behind the cluster first, then follow the line out and look under the hood. I have to replace the ODO gear anyway.

Homemade boost leak tester
Can give you some ideas to test the whole system with pressure. I usually try to fart in one end right before I used compressed air, makes it a bit easier to find the leaks.

Did you try capping off at the vacuum tree the line leading to the boost gauge?

Might check the brake booster hose. It is situated fairly close to the driver and is the only thing that will leak that much boost.

Could be a loose or split hose right off the turbo. Thats a big leak, it won't be hard to find.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I think I found my leak...the hose clamp on the turbo's outlet (turbo to upper IC pipe) wasn't even tightened down. The PO must have been driving this way for some time. Some things had been replaced in that area of the car; I guess they forgot to tighten that clamp.

My question is...how the heck do you get down there to tighten that thing?! I now see why redblock guys don't like the FWD cars - the turbo is impossible to access. I also see that it's damn near impossible to remove the CBV as well.

Stubby screwdriver, carpal tunnel syndrome, and some choice curse words? Am I missing anything? I don't know how I'm gonna reach that POS. lol.

Oh...also...I'm probably running lean under boost. The vac line to the bottom of the FPR blows out; this would mean I'm not getting the step-up in fuel pressure with boost (it would stay at the static pressure...are these 3.0 bar or so?).

I gotta get that sorted out too. Looks like a trip to the Stealership for some decent vac line and an 8V intake mani gasket for my grandma's 740.

Wow...car pulls like a freight train now! Drive it a couple miles to test it out. Although, it's getting ping on 91. I think I only went WOT once for a couple seconds. :( Methinks 18psi is a little too much.

Ordered the MAP sensor for my boost gauge. Should have it installed Thurs or Mon.

Good to hear.

You fixed the FPR vacuum?

W/O that, you're stuck @ 3bar. over 10psi boost, should be closer to 4bar, under vac, 2.5bar
