Dash "Idiot Lights"

I am usually really good about having the oil changed in my volvo (1995 850 turbo wagon) but since I am not driving the car EVERY day I may wait a little longer than what the date says that "Prompto" puts on my windshield.
I haven't noticed it burning oil, and it isn't leaking oil at all, BUT I did notice my car beginning to make a 'ticking' noise while it idles and my instinct made me want to check the oil.
Well, nothing showed on the stick, even after adding 2 quarts! I was mortified that I was so low on oil and no dash lights went on to warn me that it was dangerously low on oil?
I've had lights warn me if a tail light is out, or I'm low on windshield washer fluid etc, but no oil light warning? How come? It really surprises me seeing that these cars are so tempermental.
Question: Does a turbo tend to burn more oil?

The rub being, oil is even more important for proper operation in a turbo.
Black 1996 854T Bils, Samcos, homebuilt MBC, R Manifold, TD04HL-16T, backcut valves, and a ridiculous amount of luck.

IIRC 850's have a low pressure light but not low oil...I think the 93 850's had both
edit I have two 850 cluster with me and they both have dummy light holders where the low oil level is.

My old 850 ran low on oil one time (still not sure what caused it...) and after turning the car off and letting the oil drip down to the oil pan, I was able to see about a drop on the end of the dip stick, not even on the stick it self, just on the stick(FYI, no oil light was on). Drove home for lack of a better option that was about 1.5 miles. There is a steep grade near my house that I was going up and I had the oil light flash on me for a split second. Almost like your windshield washer fluid when it's running low.
I can't remember how much oil it was to fill it up again though, but I do believe it was around 2quarts.
