Before installing any performance parts, you have to make sure the car's maintenance is at least up to par. If your oil level is low, your catalytic converter is plugged, you can't really expect to install a performance par and have no issues afterward.
I use a Garrett actuator (that I also sell) in my 305,000 miles 94 850 turbo along with a custom ECU by thelostartof and manual boost controller up to 14psi for over 4 months with no engine or turbo problems.
You don't need a custom ECU, but you will have to have an aftermarket boost controller to control the stronger spring actuator or else you're going to run into overboosting issue.
I have also sold more than half a dozen of the Garrett actuator and have not heard any bad reports either.

My car is the stage 0 queen.....if it comes off the motor, I've probably replaced it. (minus internals and trans.) I did all this first, before any major performance stuff. I chose to do it first to avoid headache down the road and it has worked quite well!
Anyhow, a few of the things on the car are.....IPD's HD TCV & CBV, 16T, 3 in. dp, 3 in. high flow cat, TME catback (no resonator) and ST 12 psi tune....which was based off of another LPT owner with similar mods who was remapped after dyno'ing 3 times. From a performance stand point the car is beyond cherry and always has had perfect boost characteristics since I finished up that end of it.
Well, I would like an R manifold one day and possibly a better FMIC.......but I'm content for now.
Anyhow, I'll shoot you a PM for further details.
