I just notice gear oil in the driveway I assume it's coming from the bevel gear seal leaking.
How soon could the gear fail? Do I have time to change the oil?
I have noticed whining and howling noise off and on. Mostly during cold weather.

why would you assume?
crawl under there with a flash light.
no one will be able to tell you how long it has left before it fails, we dont know how much oil is in it, how many miles it has, shit we dont even know what car it is.
information buddy, information.

Wow, I guess I'm tired.
It's a 2000 v70xc with 160,000.
My wife just took the car. And I noticed a few drips where she has been parking this past week.
What else leaks gear oil?

either put up on stands or ramps to check level yourself and see where leak is, or take it in.
the seals can be replaced, about $500, or less at an Indy mech.

These must be dealer parts only.
Has any one found a rightup for this?
This seems like quite a common problem and an expensive fix to replace the whole thing.

are you good with a wrench? its not too bad of a job, pull both front axles, unbolt the driveshaft and then there are like 5 14mm bolts holding it to the tranny.

Different things can leak on the angle gear.
There are a number of seals on it: The left side where the coupler mates to it, the right side where the driveshaft passes through (2 seals and an o-ring in there) and often it is the o-ring which is leaking. Unfortunately, in order to replace that, you need a Volvo special tool and it needs to be done right or else the gear will have a very short life afterwards. There are also a couple of seals on the back where the prop shaft mates up. It's about 65 dollars worth of seals (100 if you replace the little sleeve in the back), + 10 dollars to get the updated vent for the weep hole, and then the dealer usually charges 300-400 dollars for the work to replace the seals.
In addition, the casing itself often leaks. The fix for this is to crack it open, and use a Volvo sealant. The dealer usually charges 500 or 600 for this re-sealing although maybe one of the techs would be nice and would re-seal it for you after hours for very little if you pull the gear yourself and re-install it yourself.
Hope this helps.
