What Would Make The Steering Wheel Shake?

I'm looking into buying a 2000 S70, and everything is great including the price. My only hang up is that when driving on the Expressway, the steering wheel vibrates. Not huge shaking, but it is definitely noticable.

The salesman said that it might be an alignment issue and they will look into fixing it and I'll drive it again tomorrow.

Is this common? Is it really an alignment issue, or is it something else? Could it be fixed? Should this be a deal breaker, or is no big deal? I'm worried it might mean this car might have been in a bad accident. I think I'm going to buy the title history on it, but haven't yet.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a 2000 S70, and have had the same problem. I just changed out the outer tie rod end and the lower control arm, this has helped a lot. I also changed tires due to the fact the treads were seperating causing them to be unbalanced at all times giving me a shake in the front-end. Front-end alignment will not cause a shake.

Have them pull a report on the car or you can do it yourself with the vin #s That should tell you if it was in any accidents. The shake could be a alignment, bent rim, or even uneven tire wear.

good luck

yeah the 850 had that problem

the rear wheel camber was way off and so where alot of the other
adjustments so we took it to a place with a machine that does the
alignment perfectly and its completely gone...

Fist off the Volvo FWD car is a harsher ride than some cars, that being said, from simple to hard, would be 1) the wheels need balancing, 2) Alignments needs normally don't cause the car to vibrate, they will wear the tires out but normally a vibration problem is not corrected with an alignment. 3) suspension parts like already mentioned.

Wow, thanks for all the responses--you were very helpful. Sounds like the vibrating shouldn't be a deal breaker. The history is clear too. I hope to buy tomorrow! I'll just take it to a local Volvo dealer and have them balance the wheels for me and hopefully that will fix it. I'll have to bookmark this site for future reference. Thanks again!
