I know there have been many posts about replacing/reparing the driver seatbelt.
I just took of the trim covering the belt mechanism, but before I wenr further I wanted some opinions/advice.
After I disconnect the battery and put the safety cover over the airbag deployment thing on the side of the seat, is there any danger of haveing the explosive charge go off ?
The belt looks to be twisted in the retractor, so it won't pull out at all.
If I can't straighten it, I will buy the entire unit. FCP seems to have the unit.
Any help would be appreciated.

If the clip is installed correctly into the sensor, you'd have to whack it pretty damn hard to set it off. Just be cautious and you should be fine, I've never read of anyone setting it off accidentally. The seat bags have explosive charges, but all the other bags are electronic trigger.
The seatbelt retractor also has an srs component in it, so be carefull. You can disable it somewhat, but it's not repairable akaik. The haynes has a brief writeup on it, you could also check out the repair instructions that i think you can find on IPD's site.
