Not necessarily, just make the torque mountain less steep, make it more gradual. You'll see lower peak numbers but you can go faster and break less

You could for example lower the peak torque by 50 Nm but still retain your 594 hp.

I do plan to do a big change once my new cams finally go in i have had very little time recently to do anything so will put the cams in once the gearbox woes are sorted i hope the hp will start with a 6

One downside, it has a different input shaft (different number of teeth) so you'd have to change the clutch plate as well.

What was the point at which the 02 boxes were introduced?

There was a general revision in 02 where the Magnetti Marelli ETM was swapped to a Bosch, The thermostat housing became angled and many sensors were altered.

Is the way to tell if the car has the "improved" box by seeing if the ETM is Bosch or MM?

Just wondering as I swapped a Dec 01 (MM ETM) engine for a early 02 (Bosch) unit on mine. Externally the gearbox appeared to be exactly the same.
