My wife's '98 S70 GLT has an issue with the door locks unlocking themselves if the key is in the ignition engine on or off. The locks operate fine if the key is not in the ignition.

Bad relay maybe?

Does you car normally unlock the doors when the car is off? If so, it is probably a sensor or relay that is causing the issue.

No, it will unlock the doors by itself only if the keys are in the ignition..on or off position. Once the keys are out of the ignition, it locks and unlocks as it should.

I know in our american cars, when you put the key in the ignition, it would lock all the doors. If it did that before hand, i would think the relay to control that in the ignition switch went kabonkers.

I'll see if I can figure out which relay is the issue and try to test swap it w/ one out of my daughters '95 854.

It's all in the Owner's Manual:

http://new.volvocars...70_041.htm#pg43

- NOTE: To help prevent accidentally locking the keys in the car, the central locking system is designed to unlock the doors immediately if the key is left in the ignition switch and the car is locked using the lock button on the door. A sound from the lock will be audible at this time.
Please note that this function will not unlock the doors if the engine is running. -

I let my car warm up a lot in the winter and the only way to lock it while
it's running is to use a second key at the drivers door. Warm is Good!

Thanks but that's not the issue I'm having. Simply put..the doors will not stay locked once the car is running (or if the keys are even in the ignition).

Ex: If we're driving down the road and try to lock the doors, they unlock themselves.

Because it is supposed to do this when the keys are in the ignition but the car is NOT running, there must be some system or relay that the car uses to determine this. As his mimics this attitude while the car is running, that sensor is probably bad. Can anyone suggest where he might look? Justin probably knows this one...

You could try swapping out the central locking relay and see what happens.

Do you have any kind of aftermarket alarm or remote start installed?

it might be that the locking unit thinks a door is open because a door is not closed properly or a switch is going bad. if a door is open with the keys in the ignition, the doors are supposed to automatically unlock. so that thing in the manual is part of the problem, but shouldn't be happening. check to see which courtesy lights are on when the door is closed if that is your problem. do the interior lights ever stay on?

Doh!!!!!! I completely forgot about a problem she was having several months back with her rear pass. door light staying illuminated. I pulled the bulb as a temp solution (not really) but never got around to tracing the root of the problem. DonutsDemise (love that screen name BTW! ) I think you're onto something with the locking unit thinking a door is still open!

Looks like I have a homework assignment ahead of me lol.
