No, I was corrected by Nebor. So, what exactly is the throttle body? And where is the IAC valve?

From what I understand now, the throttle body is the part with the circular flap with the bar going through the middle. Is that even correct?

The throttle body is the metallic square piece of metal with a cylinder through it. You know where your air box is? Well just up from that is the AMF, or air mass flow meter. Next up there will be a hard plastic tube, approximately 3" in diameter, the flame trap that you cleaned plugs into the side of this. Next up towards the engine is the throttle body. When you take it out, it will have a metal circle in the middle of the cylinder, this is called the butterfly valve. When closed, this piece of metal is at an angle perpendicular to the rest of the cylinder, meaning that no air comes through. When the throttle is depressed, the butterfly valve opens, allowing air to pass on either side of it. If this is dirty, it can not closer properly, not open properly, or the sides of the throttle body can disrupt air flow.

That's the best I can really explain it. And I'm not too sure if that's the exact layout on an 850, I've only helped take a T5 apart once at the shop, but it should be pretty similar to the 6-cylinder 960, since the motors are the same. I want to say the throttle body is located on the right side of the 5-cylinder engines.

Again, someone more familiar with 850s can probably help you out more.

Ok, thanks all.

I've kinda been meaning to buy a manual, but found it to be increasingly un-neccessary. I suppose I might as well, though. Seems that it should come in handy atleast a little.

From what Nebor says, I did clean the throttle body then. I left it attached, but I cleaned that butterfly valve, as he put it.

Pictures of how to replace the flame trap show me what I've already learned, but don't mention the IAC valve. What it is exactly and it's whereabouts are still a mystery to me.

Starman,

I think they call it the Idle Air Motor in the flame trap replacement instructions. They mention leaning a hose against it in about the third step.

Ok. So, if you are looking directly into the throttle body, is that thing plugged in a little up and to the left of the TB?

how does it respond when you step on the accelerator from a standstill?
If it hesitates, it could very well be vacuum leaks.

It doesn't really seem to drive differently. It's just very shaky.

Ok. Looked at the IAC valve, but couldn't figure out how to get those metal rings off of the hoses that go to it. Are they meant to be reuseable?

They are, but ooh boy are they a PAIN in the jerk(yeah I typed jerk not the filltered word heh) smile.gif Any ways, the top one I believe you can take some pliers too, if you look at it carefull y enough, the little nub in the clamp is where alot takes place. What i did was I took my pliers, put it on the nub, then found the smaller tab that almost sits with in a track on the clamp. YOu "close" them together bring the tab, and the nub closer together, then it should snap off. As for the bottom, I would say take a closer look, I dont remember it being very hard. I will try to look later if I can. Good luck

Ok. Yeah, I could sorta guess how they worked, but wasn't sure if it would come off too easily. I'll just have to go more indepth on trying to get it apart when i'm not so concerned with if I'll be able to get it back together.

I don't get to drive my car very often, being at college and all, but here's an update:

It's still quite shaky at anything under 1700 RPMs (or so), but the throttle response is very nice. I really like the way it drives now.

So, I took a look under the hood with the engine running, and noticed that there is still this rythmic clicking noise coming from the area of the fuel injectors. If I put my hand on that bar that covers them, I can feel what feels like something tapping it everytime I hear the click. Any ideas what could be causing this?
