96 850

I have a creaking sound when I turn my wheel to the left- most noticably when making a U-turn. My Indie says it's the passenger side axle. I am curious how big a job it is to replace- I have replaced the wheel hubs, rotors and brakes in the past with the help of Bay 13. How big a job and can I do it using without a lift?
Thanks!

Kinetic,

I would say yes. Based purely off of my own experience with my indy replacing my front right axle. If you replaced wheels hubs...

however, he did it so quickly and easily it may have looked alot easier than it was. He did it, with a lift, in about 30-40 minutes. And he wasn't in a rush.

The job isn't that bad, use the post in the maintenance section for doing the bearing hub as a guide. Make sure your steering stop are lubricated well before blaming the axle.

I second the comment on making sure your steering stops are well greased. I had a terrible creaking sound and thought the worst blink.gif until I applied $.05 worth of grease on the stops. Good as new biggrin.gif

Once the axel is out of the hub, it just pops out of the transmission, correct? Or is there some special tool needed to hold clips open or something...

Once you have the axle out of the hub, the end that is in the tranny will come out by carefully pushing it out with a large flat head screwdriver or pry bar. Be careful while doing this, but with a little prying the axle will pull out of place. Pry in between the CV joint and tranny. Mine pulled out with little effort when I replaced my CV Boots. Good luck.

Second question, thanks for all the help. If the axle is making the trademark "popping" noise that indicates a problem (hence why I'm asking), is it necessary to replace the entire thing? I know the outboard CV boot is bad, would replacing it and regreasing the joint solve the problem? I think the axle has 84k on it right now. There is a significant difference in price from a brand new axle, a rebuilt one, and a CV boot kit.

If the Axle is making noise, repacking the grease with a new boot will not fix it. I've not seen the inner or outer CV shaft parts offered seperately.

I finally got around to looking at member posts regarding replacing the axle. Thanks for all the hints. It sounds like the axle can be pulled out when the hub is off correct? secondly, where are the "stops" that are mentioned here? I might try the grease application first.

Thanks again
