One definition of Socialism: driving on All-Season radials in a New England winter.

[rant] Seriously, if there is routine snowfall where you live in the winter, then you need snow tires. Most people don't own them, of course, which means the government is forced to plow the roads constantly and cover them with corrosive, environmentally damaging chemicals. All because your lazy, cheap ass won't spring for a set of steelies and the right tires for the task at hand.

Not only are you All-Season tire pansies rolling roadblocks, you're also government freeloaders who expect Uncle Sugar to keep you out of the ditch. You're sad and slow and you have to go. If you can't afford snow tires, then run your flashers and pull to the shoulder to let the non-crippled cars go by. Don't make my next mod be a 'roo bar. [/rant]

While I agree snow tires are a good idea,

Does the school bus, the fire truck, and the ambulance travel just fine to your house on unplowed, unsalted, unsanded roads just thanks to some snow tires? Yes, I realize I just cited a bunch of public works vehicles. Somehow, I don't think we plow the roads just to go to Dunkin Donuts.

It's the CONSTANT plowing that's retarded, and the huge amounts of salt and sand used. It makes people expect that the government will keep them safe, rather than being more alert and self-reliant. I'd bet money that equipping every car with snow tires would be cheaper than running the state trucks 24/7 every time we bet a 2" snow fall.

Couldn't agree more.

I get people all the time saying must be nice to be able to afford or have the ability to store a set of wheels for the summer. I'm like well 1st)the tread you save on your reg. tires pays for the snows in the long run(you can get more life outta your reg. tires as there not getting beat up by the harsh winter inviro). 2nd) you don't have a corner in your basement or garage to stack 4 wheels then you need to get rid of some shit .

Right. I can stash two sets of wheels/tires under my stairs in the basement. Come November or so, I pull 'em out, dust 'em off and check the pressure. It takes all of ten minutes to roll out the snows and swap out the summer set up. The kicker is, it's actually fun to drive in the snow on snow tires. :D

The problem is that you're wising people were smarter and more responsible. You know how many people I see flinging snow from their tires in an inch of snow because they don't know how to drive and/or have bald tires? Or the people tailgating going 85mph in a snow storm?

Learned to drive on ice in Alaska so maybe I'm bias, but a plowed road is better even with snow tires than an unplowed road. Sand, and salt are a lot cheaper than new roads. I always had the spikes off by the required day, but I can tell you I tore the hell out roads anyways. If you have ever driven anything over 50k pounds on ice you would not be saying this.

Holy Fig Newtons.

Saying what? I said the state shouldn't have to plow the roads constantly, or dump an excessive amount of chemicals, just because you, the driver, won't pony up for a set of snow tires. And I'm assuming that most of us are driving Volvo passenger cars, not 50 ton behemoths with ice-spikes. So how is that relevant?

Fuck wishing. "Common sense" can be legislated. How many people would voluntarily have car insurance if it wasn't required?

You live in a snow climate, buy snow tires. Willful stupidity, all-season radials and dialing 911 when the inevitable happens is no way to go thru life.

You like food and fuel don't you? Neither is coordinated so its not like they can plow once for the daily resupply.

Snow tires would not help the majority of drivers around here.

But really, you're definition of socialism can probably be found in DOT's budget or their employee's over-time wages.

So you have no reply to emergency vehicles, food, and fuel? But good job, you called me lame. Congrats on carrying on the discussion.

What effing discussion? You don't bother to read what's posted, then suggest I be "legislated," whatever the hell that means. Congrats right back atcha for playing the internet-victim card, and have fun in this here sandbox.

Oh my.

I did see a town truck plowing a parking lot at a park.

The park had 2 baseball fields and a set of tennis courts. Play ball!

And it was 2 inches of snow.

Thats just a bit of waste. And a lack of common sense.

And thats the real problem.

I dont want them plowing so much cuz the plow guy has it in for my mailbox. He gets some distance with that thing. I'm tired of chasing it across my front lawn.

I've read every word posted. Now start replying. The question still stands. How do you propose the larger important vehicles travel without all of the salt, sand, and plowing? And here in New England, the following day when the sun comes out and heats up all the snow, and that night it goes sub-32 and creates an ice rink, do we require studs for all as well?

Wingnut, pretty sure they get paid by the hours they put in. You'd know better than I would. So I bet that's why they plow every square inch of public property. You got your shit stolen, and your mailbox taken off? You need some cameras up ASAP.

Yeah, hourly union wage, AFSCME.

Rural can suck as bad as the big city. Working on that camera thing.

The plow guy is bold, I was standing at the end of the drive with my dog and he came flying up the hill and hit my MB with a 40mph tsunami of snow. Looked like Charlie Brown taking a fastball back thru the box.

Hows that snow shit working out for you metro DC-Philly guys?

Better you than me.
