On my S70 T5 1998, initially I had the ABS light come on. The Volvo dealer here in Germany, checked and cleaned the sensors. Seemed to work for a day or so. The they told me I would have to replace them.

A month or so later, the check engine light comes on. Had them check that and they said I needed a replacement ECU. Their prices were ridiculous, so I purchased both items from a US Volvo salvage parts online store.

My questions are, after reading some of the threads here, have I wasted my money. Can the items be replaced easily enough without taking it back to the dealer., or should I just suck it up, and let them do everything from scratch.

I'm not planning to keep this car, as we are leaving here, but don't want to pass on or hide the problems from any prospective buyer.

Advise appreciated.

Thanks

for you model year, 99% of the time the culprit is the ABS module not the ECU.

You can have yours repaired for about $135, and it's a DIY replacement, don't spend more money at that dealer until you fix the ABS module. Do a search on this board and you'll find the person who fixes them.

A loose electrical connector to the ABS module can cause the same symptoms, so make sure that connection is tight, and wrap a plastic tie around the module and connector to keep it tight.

Thanks John,
Don't shoot me, but where is the ABS module located, and is it easy to get to.
Are there any schematics/drawings out there on the net to look at?
Will this also cause the check engine problem?
I suspect there is a loose connection, as I cleaned up the sensors and it seemed to be working OK for a while, then I slammed the door and the ABS light came on again. Its ON, its OFF. Check engine is staying on though.[

ABS module is in the engine bay, by the firewall just under and a little to the left of the brake master cylinder.

Is a rectangular box about 4"x6", and brake fluid lines attach to the upper portion, which is the ABS pump. The module is the part underneath the ABS pump.
