dublin14 19
My engine is being pulled out very soon and i am getting the head done while its out, plus rods ect ect! Im going to get a gasket match P&P and a 3 angle. Im just wondering if i should just clean up and reuse the stock valves or go bigger? I really dont know much about this topic is why i ask. lookforjoe 2,702
It seems a later 2.3l T5 head is really the way to go. If you're keeping the stock 98 head, just clean up what's there. 3-Angle job is standard, 5-angle would possibly be better.

dublin14 19
Is an 01 2.3 head a "simple" bolt on head though? If not the if the 99 head has bigger Valves, and simply bolts on, then maybe that is the head to by and work on. My whole goal here is to keep the install simple... as i will be paying for the labour:monkey: Is an 01 2.3 head a "simple" bolt on head though? mdlimy 850
late 99 is the bigger valves, solid lifters, and unfortunatly usually cvvt on the exhaust. as far as i know all the late 99 and up heads have the same large valves, solid lifters and the larger intake ports, cant help you much as far as bolt simplicity goes. but from what i hear, the newer heads have 20% larger intake ports! thats a gain that you should definetly want if you are trying to make some decent numbers. Yeah its just how to get the newer heads to work with my 98 2.3 is the problem. If i had a guy that had done this before and knew what they are doing it would be an easier decision. I guess really my option right now is to keep it simple and just P&P and 3 angle the head thats on there right now. Hopefully that will be enough?

Hopefully that will be enough? it seems to be one of those things that everyone has planned but not many are actually doing it if i were you i would hold off on the head work and do some more research and figure out the newer head thing, i think there is wayyyyy more gains by using the new style head rather than doing head work to an older style, aaron would probally know what it takes to make that head work. really all you need to know is coolant and oil passages, other than that i know everything will work fine, it will bolt on fine, intake will bolt on, exhaust will bolt on etc etc, as long as the coolant and oil passages line up you will be good to go, but of course we need to confirm this. It would be nice if someone had a step by step for upgrading from a 98 T5 head to a say an 03 T5 head! Its really about money for me as i dont have the tools at home to do the work. With the engine being pulled and getting built and me paying by the hour to get this done, any extra truble shooting is not so easy on the wallet! I used to have full use of my friends shop until he had a stroke, but thats all gone now. Thats were i put in a totally built 600HP Bigblock 454 into my 18ft Checkmate Jetboat:D:D:D two yrs ago. 86mph on the GPS OH yeah!!!

I thought they (he & Aaron) outlined the conversion in that thread...
mune237 78
He "ajhehr" is selling VVT cam deletes in Member Announcements, that looks like it replaces the VVT hub for pre 99 models. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/131852-more-stuff-no-one-wantsagain/ also "mdlimy5" is putting a 00 engine in his pre 98 right now. I've been told that you loose the added benefit of a 5 angle over the 3 angle very quickly so it best to just get a 3 angle job.
