Car (94 850 Turbo) has been running great... Always starts first try, etc.

In fact it started first try this morning. Ran for about 1-2 seconds and died. Now it just cranks. I don't really have time to troubleshoot this morning (gonna take the spare car to the office) just wondering if anyone else has had this happen.

Luckily it happened in my driveway, and not at work or on the road! This car always seems to break down in my driveway... Wonder if it's trying to tell me something? tongue.gif

same thing happened to me yesterday (95 850 N/A) in my driveway as well, it was my fuel pump. car would start and run on a few cylinders for 30 seconds and die. How many miles are on your car? I have 210k on mine.

The exact same thing happened to me when either the MAF was disconnected or the turbo inlet hose was disconnected.

Thanks for the replies!

Funny, I thought MAF almost immediately. A while back the car actually ran a little bit longer with the MAF (accidently) disconnected than it did today.

Fuel pump is on my list to check, along with cam and crank sensors.
Seems to me it has to be electrical somehow because it actually fired off for a second and had been running perfectly yesterday.

Hopefully I'll get some time to play with it this weekend.

My filter was replaced not too long ago.

For the pump, I was thinking of listening to see if I hear it run and then check the fuel rail to see if I have fuel. Mine has a little cap (looks like a valve stem cap) on the pass side that you can remove and depress the pintle inside (again, just like a valve stem for a tire) and see if fuel comes out.

OK, checked all the fuses under the hood (by the windshield) and they are ok.
No fuel coming out of the pintel at the end of the fuel rail. Sounds like the pump is dead.

Tried to see if I had power (pink and black wire) at the fuel pump - Nothing. Tried feeding +12V to the pump (red and black wire coming from the pump) and still nothing! blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

I'm now cornfused. Am I not supposed to get power at the pink/black wires? Shouldn't feeding +12v to the red/black wires at the pump make it fire up?

Is there another fuse that I should be looking for? Even if it is a fuse when I feed power to the pump it should turn on, right???

Still not starting?

I tell you our cars are the devil, mine didn't start at all last night after trying hour after hour...Then started up like magic this morning. Check battery connections? One time I was having a starting problem and it turned out to be that my battery was touching a TINY bit of metal and that alone stopped the car from starting.

If you put 12 v to the pump and nothing happened, that tells you the pump is kaput. If you are questioning whether or not 12 are reaching the pump, get a test light. Hook up the pink and black to the test light, hit the key and see if you get light.

Thanks All!

I used a digital multimeter and wasn't getting anything from the harness leads (pink/black) and when I fed +12v and GND (from the dist block for my amp). What I didn't think to do was make sure I was actually getting 12v on the 2 wires I ran over. Maybe I have a bad wire or crappy ground... Who knows?

I'll check that, and the FP relay tonight.

Thanks again for all the input guys!!

Mine had a similar problem. Started then stopped. ADAC mechanic found a faulty sensor not sending so the plugs were getting no spark. Also found some faulty hoses.

Thanks for the input. Mine turned out to be the fuel pump.

All better now... Well except that I tore off the intake manifold for cleaning.

Once I get that back together all should be well.
