Introduction:

Hello all I'm Dan. My day job is a Marine officer but I spend most of my time and money modifying automobiles. I take a great amount of pride in what I do, so consider me a die hard enthusiast. My wife and I are expecting our first child here in a few months and I had been looking for a perfect vehicle accommodate all the things that come with a new child. Initially I was looking for a E34 BMW wagon that I wanted to swap an M3 engine into but I quickly found out that there where very few on the market in good condition. After searching on Craigslist for wagons for a few weeks I stumbled on a 1998 Volvo T5 for sale for $800. I must admit that I knew nothing about this car but the price was attractive and the seller was local.

The visit: When I arrived at the sellers house we were greeted with one of the worst maintained cars I had ever seen. Keep in mind that I have had a hand in repairing some vehicles that have been in very poor condition but none that compared to this. First off the car didn't crank over due to a dead battery and we connected jumper cables the car would turn over but not start. After a bit of head scratching and careful listening I noticed that the fuel pump wasn't priming; after a quick check under the hood I noticed that the FUEL PUMP FUSE WAS MISSING!!!!!! Two minutes the car was running and bellowing white smoke everywhere. At this point I figured it had a blown head gasket but after about ten minutes of running the smoke color changed from solid white to a grey color with a blue tint. "Great I say, its only burning oil, maybe it will need new valve seals or something more labor intensive". The rest of the car was a wreck, trash was everywhere, the windshield was cracked and the front end had been in an accident. My wife gave me the "go ahead nod" and I gave the guy his asking price. When we talked on the way home she said it would be a good project to keep me busy and we never worked on a Volvo together before (My wife is very handy and has helped me do everything from paint cars to engine swaps).

Here are a few pics of what we found.

nice find. for $800 a 98 with a good body and decent interior is still nice.

You'll enjoy it when it's done. welcome to the site. Don't forget to fill out your location, come to meets and have people help you out with the car. :)

Welcome! As Jaxx said, you'll be pretty happy with what you have there once its all fixed, let us know where you're at and there might be some guys willing to help you with it if not they might have some parts handy that you might need.

Looking forward to what comes out of this, any plans to modify it or just fix it up and use it as a family vehicle?

Thank you both for the warm welcome. I'll be adding pics in regards to the progress of this project. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I must admit that I'm a little intimidated when it comes to these cars. Any meets in the South Carolina/ Georgia area?

The Arrival:

The seller agreed to tow the car to my home for $50; by that time I had already purchase a battery and some gas. I let the car run for about 30 mins and it never overhead and the smoke completely went away.

I was so ecstatic that I decided to give the car a good overall cleaning. With the help of my wife and 13 years of Marine Corps motivation the car ended up looking like this...........

Nice. Thank you for saving another Volvo, have fun with it and be tasteful as I'm sure you will be.
Nice E36 in the background, too. I took a BMW tech training course (3 years) and worked at a BMW dealership for a while..so we're both in the same boat!

That cleaned up really well and it sounds like the engine just needed a good running. I suggest you invest in a prettier steering wheel; that thing is fugly.

So far I have about $950 and alot of elbow grease into this project so far so good.

Engine Detail and IPD Stage 0: I hate dirty engine compartments; they conceal leaks and other potential problems under the hood. After reading up on the performance potential of these cars I decided to cover all the basics and get this vehicle running it tip-top shape before and\y major upgrades. Overall the car was a dog on the road;It wouldn't rev past 3k and would go over 35mph. It shifted hard a bellowing black smoke whenever I pressed the gas pedal. It also had a CEL with read P0172 ambient air sensor (or something to that effect).

I called IPD since it seemed that they are the authority with these type of cars but to be honest they weren't very helpful over the phone. I tried to gain some advice about the CEL and with componemts they recommended replacing but they told me to "check the forums online" so that's what I did (thanks VS). Overall IPD had a solid web site so I placed and order for the following items.

Transmission flush kit
Genuine Volvo Spark Plugs
Haynes Manual
Mahn air, oil (case) and fuel filter
13 Quarts of transmission fluid (Mobil3309)
IPD windshield decal

268.94 + 50.87 SHIPPING OUCH!!! =319.81

Old plugs that came out of the car, can anyone say RICH!!!!!!!

Posted Image
Posted Image

Axle was cake and took about 45mins

The transmission flush was the most noticeable improvement by far, very smooth except for the failed upper mount that I hadn't noticed.I also did an oil change using Royal Purple 5W30
I also ordered a few parts from FCP Groton.
Passenger side axle
Headlight lenses 9E Code)
Bosch MAF for the stumbling (more on this later)
Rear hatch shocks

10% off and free shipping using a discount code!!!!!!!!!

$340

Grand Project total $1609.81

In the future if you can wait on parts for a few days call Darrell Waltrip Volvo in TN. They usually beat FCP/iPD's aftermarket prices with OEM parts. Not saying FCP/iPD have inferior products, I've bought from both many many times, but dollarwise DW is pretty hard to beat on the bigger ticket items.

You drive the car after the axle swap? Sort of a moot point as I just bought rebuilds from Raxles, but wanted to know how the DSS ones fared for you.

Funny that you said that, I just purchased a painted V70R bumper from Don and I arrived sightly damaged (very minor), to make up for it he's sending me the grilles for free. I was amazed!! http://volvospeed.co...-waltrip-volvo/

The axle works just fine but only time will tell, it does have a lifetime warranty and my labor is free so there shouldn't be any big problems.

Awesome deal, I'm certain your going to grow onto the car and get your money's worth out of it.

After driving my car for this long, I can't get in another car without noticing the flaws that Volvo's don't have.

BTW I see you're in MASS also, did you happen to be at the second Cars and Coffee event that was promoted by Yuppie racing, I know there were a few nice Volvos in the section to the left of the main entrance.

I like the BMW's everything about the mods done to them is clean. the only problem... 318ti, those hatchback things are uggggllyyyyyy... I mean, I'd rock one with an S52 in it but like... if the engines are factory... meh at best. All the work looks well done, just the base platform I'm not a fan of.

ON THE OTHER HAND! That engine bay is clean! Loving the work and hopefully you can learn as much about Volvos as you know about BMW's and grow some undying love for the Swedes.

Cleaned up well, it looks much better. Some aluminum polish on the front of the head and you'll be done with those oil stains.

Where did you find Royal Purple in that size container ? Sounds tempting.

Was the car wrecked or did the previous owner not know how to deal with a stuck hood latch ?

Props to you for doing this, it's pretty cool to see it.
