Hi,

I picked up a set of S70 door handles to swap into my 850. I have installed three of them with no problem. I am now stuck on the front drivers side. I had originally thought that I could swap lock cylinders from my 850 into the S70 handle. It seems that the two lock cylinders are of a different design and are not interchangeable. Am I missing something or will I have to use a passenger side handle (without the hole for the lock) on the front drivers side?

Or can I use the drivers side handle and modify the S70 cylinder to make just a dummy lock for cosmetic purposes?

Hopefully my key fob works, or else Ill just have to use the trunk to lock/unlock.

If you have done this common mod, what did you do?

Thank you!

Many folks use 2 pass handles, I think you can also cut off the tab coming from the cylinder and make it a dummy.

I have seen one writeup from someone who frankensteined the 850?/70 stuff together, but it was a bit ago. I'm also pretty sure you can make the 70 series work with the door, but you'll carry 2 keys (or keep one in the trunk ;) ).

I've found that if i park my car for a week and come back to it, my remote often does not work until after I've unlocked with the key first. But shaving the locks sure looks sexy.

Another option you can do is run a switch to the trunk and tap into the door lock switch wiring on the dash so you can trigger the power locks from the trunk if your remote didn't work.

You can re key the s70 door lock to work with your 850 key. You will need to take out the tumbler from the s70 lock and take it apart. There are 8 keys in the tumbler. You can arrange them in an order to fit your 850 key. Now you will more then likely need some keys another s70 tumbler to get all of the keys to sit flush so the tumbler will rotate in the cylinder barrel. There are only about 10 or 12 different keys for the tumbler. Here's a posting on how it was done on another kind of car,but this is what you can do to re key. Have fun.........http://www.zeebuck.com/bimmers/tech/doorlocks/doorlocks.html

Thank you for all the replies! I started to try to rekey the s70 lock but while I was taking apart the housing, the long rod came off and I just decided to keep the different lock in there as a dummy lock. I cleaned up my key fobs and got them working again, so those will do the trick for now.
