[smudge cycles]

While driving home on Tuesday, my steering started to feel vague. It's as if I were driving with two front flats. While driving in a straight line, the car feels fine and tracks well, but the slightest turn in either direction causes it to spoon. There's also a breif lag between steering wheel input and car response. It almost caused me to drive off the road on a 40mph exit.

The effect is more noticable at speeds over 25mph. It's hardly detectable at low speeds even while taking sharp corners. The power steering isn't notchy, it isn't making any discernable noise and doesn't feel any more difficult to turn the wheel.

I have about 144K miles
The PS fluid level is OK
Tire pressure is right on
Tires are in good shape
I pulled on the rear anti-sway bar, it's secure
I didn't check the front bar
A visual inspection didn't reveal anything to be out of place

Any ideas on what might cause this.

Any suggestions for a reputable shop in the Montgomery county area of MD?

I hadn't noticed any steering fade previous to Tuesday. As it turns out, it was the upper strut mount on the passenger side. It's replaced and I bought one so I can replace the driver side soon.
