I have a driver's side S70 door handle waiting to go into my car (the other three are in), but I have no idea how to pull the S70 lock tumbler (I do not have the original key).

I know how to pull the 850 tumbler (put in key, push spring with flat head, pull out), but not the S70 tumbler. And once they are out, do they simply swap in?

Okay I found this:

http://volvospeed.co...grade-for-850s/

Looks like I'll have to re-pin the S70 lock, which I think I can manage.

But I still need to find out how to remove the tumbler from the S70 lock w/o the key.. any ideas?

No, the S70 key tumbler is not swappable. It's a completely different design with exception of the key design acceptance..

Your best method to get the S70 key to work is to re-key the tumbler to accept your 850 key.

http://www.zeebuck.c.../doorlocks.html

Try using moving around the stock plates to get it to accept it as best as possible, then with the remaining plates that just don't fit, dremel them so that they do accept the key. It's best to try to keep all the plates in (for security reasons).

Will do. Any suggestions on how to take the S70 tumbler out? It would seem like it will be impossible unless you have the key in.

um..the MacGuyer method... hairpins and screwdrivers, toothpicks, whatever you can do to pick the tumbler.
work from the furthest plate and slowly pull out the tumbler.

edit... MacGyver

Was afraid of that. Looks like it's time to pickup some lock picking skills. I need to look at the lock more closely and see if the pins are visible from the outside.

There's only 10 plates in there, so it can't be that hard.

There's gotta be a way to use the 850 tumbler in an x70 handle.

To take the S70 tumbler assembly out of the handle, I just inserted my 850 key, then turned it as much as possible (moves maybe 1mm but its enough to "grab"), at the same time I pulled the key while pressing in on the little retaining clip and the lock slid right out.

No can do. Like I said earlier, the 2 door handle designs are completely different. Volvo redesigned the S70 one to use plastic, so the tumbler snaps in completely differently whereas the 850 was made with metal... Infact the S70 tumber has a larger diameter..

I tried that, didn't really work. Did you use a vise?

the tumbler is held in by a pin to the handle and you dont need a key to get it out, i havent figured out how to take the tumbler apart yet, ive tried everything, i need to get a few extra tumblers to mess around with.

Which part? The circular part that accepts the key is the tumbler. It's supposed to slide out of it's larger metal assembly and leave a circular hole.

to my knowledge the that whole thing is called the tumbler, it may be the tumbler assembly. i need to get a few of them to experiment with it to see how they are held together.

A tumbler is always defined as the circular part that accepts the key. Inside of it are the pins an springs. The tumbler and remaining assembly comprise the lock as a whole. Once the tumbler is taken out of the lock assembly the pins simply come out. In the 850 lock, if you have the right key, you put it in, turn it a bit and while releasing the locking pin on the top pull the tumbler out. The problem with most S70 locks is that we don't get the original key.

I think I screwed up my terms. I was just referring to removing the entire lock assembly from the plastic handle.

Ahhh. Yeah, that's just held in by a few clips. So far it seems like picking it is the only way.

can't you just leave the lock in there? why remove it if the 850 assembly wont fit in there anyway.

When i did my swap i just rearranged the x70 keys in the x70 tumbler to accept my 850 key. In order to pull the x70 tumbler out, you need to first pop off the cap around the lock. next turn the on it's side, where the 2 screw holes are and you will notice a small clip. then you pry up the little clip with a pick or small screw driver and the tumbler will slide out.

850 and x70 tumbler side by side

Posted Image

Now you have to access the keys, first you have to pry off the locking ring around the top of the tumbler

Posted Image

be careful cause the ring can break, under that is the locking ring, most likely they will come out together, once out the tumbler will slide out of its metal casing and look like this

Posted Image

then the tumbler is exposed and can be pulled out of its smaller case to access the tumbler keys.. be careful when pulling the tumbler to get to the keys, as the keys are under tension and can pop out..

Posted Image

from there is basically trial and error rearranging the tumbler keys, with your 850 key in the tumbler. when you have the right tumbler key, your key will slide in and turn freely without any snagging. its best to do 1 at a time, starting from one end this way you know all the preceding keys work. you may not have all the right keys needed, so it is best to have a spare tumbler for extra keys, or the dealer may have some for you. i currently have 1 tumbler key missing from my tumbler, but my key fits fine. i am have problems locking my car with the key, but i can unlock it which is most important. i always use my fob, so there is no need to use the key unless the fob goes out.

The locking pin shaft thing, that goes into the door, it won't an 850 fit because the end on x70 one is too tall compared to the 850 one. you just have to dremel the sides a bit and it will fit in. when installing the lock, i found it best to completely install the door handle first, then insert the door lock into the door handle, so the shaft lines up inside the door.

Rob
