I have posted this a few years ago, but I found a mechanic who had that handheld tool to reset. Ok, here is my problem, and it happens every year when the weather gets hot. Instead of the odometer reading miles per hour it reads kilometers per hour. For each mile I drive, the odo states its 1.6, which is putting more miles on the reading. Is there a way to reset back to the US standards of MPH through the diagnosic ports under the hood.

If anyone can help me I would happily paypal them money for a case of beer.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have this exact problem (though I've never had it switched back, it's just always been in km, at least since I've had the car).
I did a search and saw a few other threads on this topic, but none have any clear answers to solve this problem.
Just to be clear, I have a 1995 850 GLT, so both the odometer and the tripometer are analog. I don't think that pressing the two clock buttons would change from km to miles. It only changes the time and temp.
Does anyone know of a way to fix this, or why it happens in the first place?

Here is the fix, see attached...My 1995 850 does this at least once a year when the season changes to summer, weird but true. I attached the file too but I don't see it anywhere, so here are the directions.

First we need to enter Diagnostic Test Mode 5 (data readout)
Key on
Put the fly wire into A7,
Push button five times, briefly but firmly. DTM5 should now be ready for use. When the LED comes on and stays on, the system is ready for entering codes. We need to enter 1-2-4 for speedometer type in this manor:
Enter first digit while LED is still on. 1
Wait for LED to go out and then come on again before entering second digit
Enter second digit while LED is on. 2
Wait for LED to go out, then come on again. Now enter third digit. 4
Read off and note down the response code. It will most likely be 1-1-1 or 1-1-2 if your in KM's
Now we need to enter DTM6 (data entry) and we only have 30 seconds from the end of the DTM5 readout to start.
Press button 6 times within 30 seconds to access DTM 6 .
Now enter the new code 1-1-4 for US market in the same manor as you entered the prevoius code.
Enter first digit while LED is still on 1
Wait for LED to go out and then come on again before entering second digit
Enter second digit while LED is on. 1
Wait for LED to go out, then come on again. Now enter third digit. 4

The LED will now repeat the codes you entered to let you check that you got them right.
When the LED comes on and stays on, confirm the entry by pressing the button and holding it down for more than 5 seconds .
Release button. LED will go out, and your done atlast.
just so you know, timing is critical, so if you get lost, just Key Off and start over

Thanks. I did the first part and I got back 1-6-1, which apparently means "fault"
I know that's not good, but it's not very specific. Does anyone have any specific idea what exactly that means?

what I have found by searching around is that the 161 iis an error code for the cluster, but maybe someone with more experience will chime in

Oh man, I've had this problem since I got the car and didn't even know it, I'm glad this topic popped up. I thought I'd had a dodgy shop swap a Canadian cluster in or something to fraud the odometer. Unfortunately, my OBD seems to be on the fritz and I can't pull actual mileage or error codes from certain ports, so not only do I have no idea how many miles are on my car, I might not be able to perform the fix.
