my car was sitting for a few hours about 80 degrees out, i start it up and hear a ticking noise, sounds exactly like when your low on oil, still heard it after driving a little and finally went away after driving for about 3, 4 min and car was fully warmed up, i sometimes hear this at start up for a split sec then goes away instantly, did oil change 2000 miles ago, is this normal sometimes with these engines, anything i can do?

i also saw on here in another thread atf works good to run in the oil for a few miles to clean it out, since it has a lot of detergents in it, should i maybe try this to quiet things down or just add the lucas?

Could it possibly be your EVAP purge valve cycling?

mine seems to tick more often. Besides the lifters making noise.

Well if you are trying to clean it out run some SEAFOAM thru the engine for a few miles before changing the oil.Worked great in my engine.Oil now looks clear and clean.Car has around 158k so it had quite a bit of sludge built up.I did flush the engine 2 or 3 times to get it as clean as it now is.

I am running 'Q' 10w40 'TORQUE' with ZDDP added for extra protection as it is great for turbo cars and cars with high milage.

+1 - I thought the same things. The EVAP Purge valves can make some really weird sounds that if you don't pay attention can be mistaken for lifter. I replace the valve and the "ticking sound" went away.

before you do anything drastic, wait to see if the problem persists. this happened to my car once, i just let it warm up until i didn't hear the noise anymore but it was 15 degrees outside and i had 10w40 in it. i use castrol syntec 5w40 now and it never happened again. also when you hear this noise, never rev the engine.

so started my car today, then driving for about 15 min and i hear the ticking again, oil level is still fine, oil looks pretty dark on the dipstick, i bought some lucas synthetic oil stabilizer, wondering if i should change the oil again and add a quart of this then the rest with oil. so this happens sometimes and sometimes i dont hear the ticking, weird, if the oil was low i would think it would be ticking all the time.

or i could check or replace the evap purge valve?

also could this be happening because i changed to a diff. oil, i have been using 5w30 for the car then just switched to 10w30 and put 2000 miles on it and got this ticking sound, before car made no sounds unless the oil was actually low? should i change the oil and switch back to 5w30?

Be very cautious of the "oil stabilizers" out there. These are merely additives that greatly increase the viscosity of your oil, and as you know, oil that is too thick can cause many kinds of catastrophic failures.

i would stay away from additives if i were you....seafoam being the exception but do not put it in your crankcase

you should give a high mileage 10w40 a try, it really quieted my motor down, i like the castrol....seal conditioners in the oil lessened my loss from my rms as well
