At what point does garden-variety stupidity become actual treason? It's one thing to protest a 'Ground Zero Mosque' that's not really a mosque and not really at ground zero; even beating up your Muslim cab driver could be explained away as an alcohol-fueled outburst of violence; but it's quite another to actually plan and hold a Koran-burning rally at your church that draws international attention, and the condemnation of General David Petraeus.

I wish I were making this up, but I'm not: Pastor Terry Jones of the "Dove World Outreach Center" in Gainesville, Florida, is holding a Koran-burning on September 11. Even though General David Petraeus has condemned his actions, the Pastor plans to push ahead:

Quote

But late today, Jones vowed he would go ahead with the Quran burning, even knowing the concerns of Petraeus and Keane for the safety of U.S. troops.

"What we are doing is long overdue. We are revealing the violence of Islam that is much, much deeper than we'd like to admit," Jones said in an interview with ABC News. http://abcnews.go.co...ory?id=11569820

So congratulations nut-jobs! Even though George W. Bush himself said time and again we are "not at war with Islam," you have demonstrated that you, at least, are at war with Islam - which is what Al-Qaeda has claimed all along - thereby negating the efforts of the State Department, the Defense Department and every American soldier who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Seriously, this 'pastor' would be right at home working with the Taliban.

Moral equivalency?

The burning of the Quran, while despicable, does not lead me to fear that pastor will preach for Christian rule of the country, stoning of adulterers, and strapping bombs on to 15 yr olds, to blow up the infidels.

Yes, it would be the same as burning the flag.

All it will do us fuel the hatred on both sides.

I'm not sure how burning a religious book at another's religious place of worship has anything to do with treason...

It's helping Al Qaeda convince moderate Arabs that the U.S. is at war with Islam, just like they claim it is. It's legal, protected speech, but it's still stupid.

Personally, I'd love it if an Islamic group held a Bible-burning right across the street. :D

So we should put fat people to trial for treason because it makes the rest of the world pissed off at our gluttony?

The actions of the United State's citizens are not on behalf of the government, nor are a statement of the government's intentions. To argue that they are means you need to eliminate the freedoms we have as an individual. Al Qaeda will use anything it can against the United States to further its goals. Even if the actions of the citizens are well intentioned, they could use it against us.

And I'm not making that argument. Be as stupid as you like. You have that right. But I'm equally free to laugh at your stupid ass.

The perfect solution to this isn't censorship, it's more freedom; if I lived anywhere near Gainesville, I'd be the one holding the Bible-burning right across the street. A perfect way to illustrate how free we are here. And if the Koran-burners choose to take offense and howl like monkeys, or worse, it would perfectly illustrate how they and our enemies are have so much in common.

You realize he's basically siding with you right? He's saying that it's retardedly unreasonable to burn a religious book of any sort. But because too many Americans have decided to hate Muslims, this is somehow "ok" to do. Part of burning a religious book that a greater percentage of Americans hold a faith in strikes the irony. You weren't mad about the Koran burning, but you were mad just because he made it personel, illustrating his point.

wow.

they dont need a reason to hate us, its already built in.

so, we should be careful what we say and do, so some crazy wont be unreasonable and blow up a building?

If you burned a Bible they would not murder Muslims, or call out a fatwah on all 'nonbelievers'.

We are dealing with apples and wackos. The radical Islamists live in the 7th century. And want to keep it there.

Christians and Jews have managed to move on and at least pretend to be reasonable.

If Jihadists need this for motivation than their cause is fading.

Do you think they will run faster with a bomb on their backs to blow up a patrol?

It is just more fuel on the fire becuase the media will be all over it. If it was downplayed and not really covered by the press, it wouldn't be a big deal, but that won't happen. There will probably be more press at the event then actual attendees and it will get national air time and probably be broadcast live on the 24 hour news stations.

I think you mean the MAJORAITY of Christians and Jews have moved on. This is obviously a radical Christian sect and not the only one in the use. Another well known one are the idiots who protest at funerals of soldiers killed in Afganistan or Iraq.

This is definately an attack against the religion and not terrorists.

OK, 100 parishioners, that's a statistical zero.

I think its partly because no real Muslim of any importance at all has condemned the tactics, motives or beliefs of the radical element in Islam.

They are also afraid of these thugs and murderers. I submit that Muslim on Muslim violence has accounted for more deaths than at the hands of the US. A significant number.

As far as the media is concerned, if it bleeds it leads. If you dont think they know they can create a fire storm of cover able news by pumping this thing up then your drinking the koolaid also.

Nothing has happened yet, but protests and riots have already started in Afghanistan.

And no one is taking about the Arab Christians being pushed out of their homes and neighborhoods. There is a lot of 'em too.

Its all a liberal plot to distract us from the fuck up in chief and his cabinet of clowns. ;)

Exactly. Ideally, the pastor of this church would have a change of heart, agree with you and call this off, but if not....

I think that's why it would be perfect to hold a bible-burning right across the street. It would hold up a mirror to the stupidity of the Koran burning, plus provide a perfect illustration of the kind of freedom we have in this country, to wit, that just because something is holy and sacred to you, it might be laugh-out-loud funny to someone else, and when they laugh you just have to suck it up.

It would never occur to me to enter someone's place of worship and make fun of the proceedings, but if you drag your religious beliefs out it public and demand that we all 'respect' them when they're as pig-eyed stupid as this crap, then I'm just going to laugh at you. Loud and hearty. :D

Probably community pressure. Government had no authority.

He got a lot of air time for him and his church. Now that the idea has been planted, lets see how many will actually do their own on the 11th.
