well you can find some nice woofers to put in there, and keep the old boxes. I think it would be a great idea, update the woofers, and the tweeters with newer components, and new rubber around the woofer. Although the new one will have that.
ok now for the receiver, does everything work on it?? HOw does it sound on good speakers when you crank the volume louder? ANy cut outs on the channels? YOu can check for weak solder points, bad connections, abused knobs, and stuff like that first off. BUt testing how it will sound with good speakers is a good idea, it will give you a great way to judge if what you want to do is possible.
My guess is that thing has vacuum tube amps, obviously not mosfet heh. So you may wanna lkook at getting replacement tubes for it, if possible.
So check to see how it sounds on a decent pair of speakers, and at what point the sound quality degrades in volume. Anyways, good luck, and let us know how it goes.
The reciever seems good. Hard to really test it too much with how blown the speakers are. I hear some artifacts from them, but much of the noise is from the blown woofers. Plus i'm using some no-name CD player with crappy RCAs. I've done some searching on the amp and it looks like it's rated at 17watts per channel. If that's it, then d@mn this system was perfectly matched. Back when my bro and I pushed them, they'd rattle the windows
upstairs. It seems that if I upgrade the wires inside and out to 16ga helps it a lot.
Anyway, I've heard about having the speakers rebuilt with new foam surrounds. Is this a decent and cheap idea?
If not, then any reccomendations on speaker/subs to use? Something to match the current system, although I think it would sound better as a 3 way.
